ebay garmin mount (and slight garmin rant)

PSA: if you like the functionality of the expensivo A.C. mount, this ebay one i picked up is a great alternative. was about $12 shipped.

Wife surprised me with the 800 for father's day, though I did cleverly drop a few hints. now I just have to figure out how to use it.

Side note/rant: it's total BS that I can buy a $100 car windshield GPS with a full complement of US maps loaded, but this high dollar unit comes with bare bones maps, and they want me to buy maps from them, that's a little insulting IMO.

agree... because really if you don't buy the maps, why not just buy a 500?

Because you can upload open source maps to a microSD card and use them to navigate.

If you don't wanna use maps, then the 500 is definitely the way to go.

that was kind of my point... if someone is buying an 800, I'm guessing they want to use maps... Garmin should include them for the price of the 800... good to know there is an alternative though...

I was sorta ticked that if I wanted the maps I had to buy the version with all the sensors. so I went bare bones. but I am gonna get an sd card for it and go opensource.

I too am the owner of a Garmin 800. I was way more satisfied with the Open Street Maps that I loaded onto a microSD card compared to the stock offerings. Wohoo OPEN DATA!

Is there a quick tutorial on setting up the open source maps?

Nevermind, I found this:http://willvk.blogspot.com/2010/07/l...-edge-705.html
