Bike Reco - Around towner that can handle a kids seat

I'm looking for a solid bike that I can use for the neighborhood. It'll have a kids seat (yepp and eventually a trailer).

It'll also be the grocery getter, bar goer, errand runner, take out food picker upper, etc. At most spending 20 minutes on it but use it to knock out all of the local errands. More or less year round.

Need to:
- disc brakes
- stable geo
- big fat tire (27.5 x 2.3+ or 700 x 40)
- fender/rack mounts
- flat bar
- less than ~$1k (give or take)

Nice to:
- internally geared
- beefy frame
- less than $700

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Sounds like you want a Surly Straggler.

Not disc, but this was my kid mobile for about 2 years. Handsome Devil. Had it built like 6 different ways.

That looks like tons of fun. Did you ever set it up with a flat bar?

I was able to find a Kona Ute on craigslist for $400 and have since ridden it in every terrain and weather condition, loaded or unloaded, one of the most fun and useful bikes I've ever owned.

For anyone who's never tried it, a bike gets very heavy with a passenger and/or supplies on board. You will appreciate having the added stopping power.

It won't be a fan favorite here but I got a trek zektor 2 for this. It meets most of your wants. The gearing it came with was appealing to me.

The geo on the trek is somewhere in between hybrid and road bike. With the fenders and duo trap it was 7xx$. You will really want full fenders with pulling a trailer.

I guess that's true but I thought that with his other requirements vs.his budget discs might be the easiest thing to eliminate. How often would a guy do long high-speed descents with a kid or load of groceries aboard?

+1 If you want 29" or 700c wheels Surly has a number of models -Karate Monkey, Ogre, etc- that will work well and can be picked up used for under a $1000.

Another unpopular hot take is that a kickstand is really useful when using a trailer.

Thanks for all of the recos...I looked into the Kona Ute/Big Dummy/xtracycle route and that seems out of price range. Scoring one for $400 though, that's amazing.

Surly mtb is a strong contender right now. I'm keeping my eyes open. Thanks all.
