wow, lucky man. If I only got to choose one to listen to the rest of my life, this might well be it.
Their long play instrumentals were so so good. Very sorry to hear. RIP Gregg. |

Saw them many times. Was at one of the Fillmore East shows that was recorded. The played with Johnny Winter and Elvin Bishop. I believe tickets were $5.50. A friend of mine who's birthday is in March would always have his birthday party at the Beacon theater when the Allman Brothers in town for the week.

I saw the Allmans the first time at 16 years old in the mid 70s, during the Enlightened Rogues tour. An uncle of mine, since deceased, was working for the band, and when they came to the town where I grew up I got to hang backstage and go out post-show with Dickey Betts and Bonnie Bramlett (the drinking age was 18 back then, and no one cared except for my dad who wasn't happy with his brother when I showed up home pretty wrecked early the next morning). Gregg seemed to be a mess back then, and needed help from his assistant/bodyguard to get to and from his organ. He was shuttled around separate from the rest of the band and just showed up to play and was taken back to the hotel immediately after the show. Bonnie was hot, and really nice to me -- I was smitten.
I've seen the Allmans countless times over the past 40 years, and last saw Greg perform with his own band about two years ago. He looked relatively healthy. I was really hoping he pulled through and we'd be seeing him and Butch Trucks get back together for some shows with Dickey Betts after the Derek Trucks/Warren Haynes incarnation of the Allmans ended. It's really sad seeing the generation of rock icons that I grew up listening to in my youth pass. |

That version of 'Whippin' Post' is as good as rock/blues gets. |

My band back in last few years of high school. Saw the original band at the Auditorium in Chicago in August '71. Remember it well. I was with the girl of my dreams (at the time) and she fell asleep during one of the very long jams. They weren't exactly her thing.
But Statesboro Blues - that will fire me up any day, any time. ...drown myself in sorrow.. Last edited by tv_vt; 05-27-2017 at 07:07 PM. |
