What about just getting one of those big moving blankets.
Another choice might be a scrap section of carpet - preferably a really small and tight berber style. Another choice would be an indoor/outdoor rug with a rubber bottom. Either can be easily rolled or folded up to put away and be fine if you occasionally drop a greasy part (linoleum will let the part bounce into the far never to be found again place); presumably you aren't trying to protect against a large liquid spill. |

come in various sizes, thick rubber, good for standing on, working on, and bonus easy to take out back and hose off. |

Linoleum remnants, wipes off any grease, easy to sweep, has a bit of padding when you drop a small part/fastener and decorative and roll it up when not in use.
