Interesting hypothesis. The article states it tastes terrible. Would Tums be a good substitute? Put it water with a flavor agent?

I worked with a guy who ran cross country at Brown University. He said this was common.

Also, they do (did?) it with race horses, though I think it is prohibited.

I've never done it, but it's perfectly legal. Alex Dowsett did it before his hour record... saying about his prep "blah, blah, blah, take some bi-carb blah, blah, blah"

One of a handful of reasons why pros get really bad stomachs all of a sudden. Sodium intake blasts off the charts... shyte yourself from there...

Old technique and it's quite common. Many nutritional drinks have this. Osmo is one such company.

If I wanted to throw up, I'd just start sprinting on a very hard hill instead.

Seems like the potential of s***ing yourself makes it not worth it? I'd love a few more seconds on certain climbs, but I feel like one bad bowel accident would make it all seem ridiculous.

Just ask Tommeke. I'd take shatted shorts if that's what it took to take home the rock.

Some guys I rode with a few years ago took Tums during the ride for cramps. (at least that's what they said they were for)

You think it looks, bad! Imagine how it feels... that ain't chamois cream.

I'm going to go along believing that is just mud flung up from the rear wheel.

Had a buddy try this during my varsity rowing days. He took two teaspoons of either baking soda or baking powder (can't remember which). He ended the race literally foaming at the mouth and throwing up over the side of the boat.
