Flats are fine and afford a lot of security for newbs or even experienced riders on really tricky terrain.
Spd if you get shoes. no reason not to

Thank everyone. After thinking about the comments and options, I am thinking I will get some simple platforms that will stay on the bike and get those Trail XT痴 to swap out for days I am actually going mountain biking.

It seems like the best way to get what I want and its not a big hassle since I doubt I will go mountain biking more than once and for sure no more than 2x per week.

I am also hunting for a $100 bike to use in place of the platform pedals

I use Time ATAC on my mountain bikes (up to 3 now) and my cross bike without issue but also wanted a bike to cruise round the neighborhood in flip flops with the kids. In the end I bought a pair of these, you screw a cleat onto the bottom of them and they clip onto what ever system you are using.

They are about $30, clip on and off in seconds without having to swap out pedals. Although the temptation to buy another bike was strong!

A nice thin pedal with metal pins is great, especially when combined with a proper mtb flat shoe, like 5.10 or the Teva Link(?). I use the Xpedo Spry (~$70) and they are great in all types of shoes, but when paired with my 5.10s, I don't miss spd pedals. For a neighborhood cruiser/trail bike, give flats a try first. Another cheap recommendation is the Fxyation Mesa pedal.

I have some Teva Links that I was using on my old beater MTB and for casual mountain biking (nothing intense) they work with flat pedals (even some I had without pins).

I go on e-bay any time I need new pedals and buy a set of this generation of ATACs. I love them.

Thank you so much for the kind offer P nut!

However, I have decided to go dedicated spd style. I think I will be happier.
