I totally agree.
Also, totally relevant to the discussion and the outdated mindsets here, there, and everywhere, one may want to revisit this thread: http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=169899 |

Another social media justice cause!
The podium girl thing was discussed in extreme detail a month or few ago on here. |

I hate to say it to the author but podium girls are not the reason why women's cycling is not as big as she'd like it to be. I agree that times change and perhaps the time has come but that reads more like sour grapes. She did pick out some of the most egregious examples to prove her point which is an extreme argumentative style. It's true in 'some' cases that women are objectified in cycling no doubt about it. Sagan, that idiot, is one of them.
I don't really care either way what comes of it. I understand times change but what the author doesn't understand is that there once was a time when a young boy would look up to being on that podium and a young girl would not think it was because she was being objectified. Today may be different, that's fine I understand that and I almost hate to say this because I don't want to cause a sht storm but it's sort of analogous to how as a child I once used to love the Dukes of Hazard but I sure am glad the flags are now coming down today |

I agree that it sounds more like sour grapes than anything else.
My wife never paid any attention to this sport until we started dating. For the past few years she's watched more and more of the Tour with me, and after reading the article I asked her opinion on whether she thought the podium girls were being objectified and she got a good hearty laugh out of the notion. I swear this meme resonates more and more with each passing day in this country. Sad really. |

Those women don't go back to their cells when they are done there. They enjoy their jobs for the most part I think. They are beautiful and they like being admired for it. I'm sure there is a line for the job. I think we can get too deep with this stuff sometimes.
As an aside, I had a patient once who had been a stripper in college. Great girl, really really smart and very accomplished later in life. We talked about her experiences working as a dancer. There is no doubt that people in all walks of life get exploited, but in situations where some people want you to believe that it is total exploitation of the woman and there is no other way around it, that isn't always the case. The only thing getting exploited in her work as a stripper was her customer's wallet. |

if I recall correctly, the article states that the women/ladies/girls/humans with non male reproductive systems VOLUNTEER to be Podium Girls.
I won't lose sleep over this micro aggression. I am offended that the article refers them as "Podium Girls". That is offensive to men and boys. The proper term should be "Podium People"
