hypothetical colnago question

-lets say you have 2 colnago frames, 1 being a mexico and the other being a master
-lets say you strip off the paint of each frame, is there a way to distinguish between the 2 frames at all?

-one of these bikes i just purchased for what i think was a pretty discounted price, but since im not a master at distinguishing whether or not it's a genuine colnago, i just wanted to see (other than the clover on the bb shell) if there was another way to distinguish if a colnago frame is in fact a colnago frame

is it really a master and really a mexico?

the master arrived in the mid/late '80s with shaped gilco tubing whereas a mexico is from the mid/late '70s and has round tubing.

however, a nuovo-mexico from the early/mid '80s has grooved pre-gilco tubing that might confuse things.

perhaps you bought a super and a mexico, those are more easily confused.

why not post pics of both frames to help clear this up?

I agree. Pretty hard to confuse the two. If it is a NM, there are a lot of ways to tell its a colnago:
Crimped tt
Crimped dt
Colnago headtube lug
Colnago seat stay caps
Colnago stamped on chain stays

Masters have distinct profiled tubing and I believe all of them have a unique colnago lower head tube lug.

good bones.

given that it has a victory groupset fitted, it actually is a colnago victory/super from the mid '80s -- not a mexico, which was from the '70s and had the older-style non-sloping fork crown and over-bb cable guides.

there's nothing structurally different between a super and a victory -- it's actually the same frame, but ernesto just hung less-expensive bits on the victory to go after a different price-point.
