The secret to choosing a "beater" watch is to set a low price limit and not let anyone talk you higher. Otherwise, you're sure to end up spending more than what you originally wanted.

I've been trying to find such an animal for years....at least one that wasn't Flavor Flav huge. What is it that makes designers think great huge hulking globs of metal are the way to go for watches? I want cheap and digital (alarms, time zones, stop watch) but slim, light and low profile. I want something that doesn't get caught on everything but still has easily accessible buttons and doesn't need three hands and an owner's manual to run. I use my watch all the time for field work and own some Casio contraption, but it's unnecessarily huge and spiky.

ditto. I hate how Timex reduced the number of buttons on their IM watches. This was the last model I loved. Sometimes they appear on ebay, and there's another model whose model # I can't find at the moment but which is all black and more discrete. I've lost two, but have two backups at the moment. 6 clearly marked physical buttons. Lots of timers and multiple countdown counters for intervals (on/rest times). Slim, cheap and the easiest tool for workouts and keeping gym locker combinations (there's a "memo" screen too!)

There are many varieties of Casio G-Shock, and some are extremely ugly and large! That said, if you look around, you might find a model you can live with. I highly recommend a G-Shock with the following 2 features: Atomic and Solar.
The atomic feature communicates with the atomic clock in Ft. Collins on a nighty basis to keep accurate time to the second (daylight savings is automatic). I've had my basic $70 Casio G-Shock for over five years and have only replaced the band once. Here is a current version of what I have: http://www.amazon.com/Casio-GWM5610-...dp_ob_title_wd |

If you want analog, Timex Expedition. 30 bucks, three hands, date, fake number dial around the outside, not huge, indiglo. Doesn't make you look like a cityboy.

Another vote for a beater Seiko diver. I have this one and love it:

$16 Timex. Buy a couple, smash them as often as you like. I've had one of these for a few years, just bought my second.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Or, if you like it in a slightly different color: http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T5K239-D...x+Men%27s+1440 I wish I could buy a bike for a $16 that works as well as one that cost $5 K, I'd have one for each day of the week. |

Citizen Eco-Drives - several reasonably priced models. Great watches, IMO...

Oris BC3
I wore a Seiko Black Monster for awhile before giving it to my brother and would recommend just about any Seiko automatic as a daily beater. My current daily wear for all physical activities to include running and swimming to playing Soldier while still looking somewhat like a grownup is an Oris BC3 on a rubber deployment strap.

Seiko 5 automatic. They run around $50 and are available in a number of variations.
I've been beating mine up for a few years now, and it's still running and looking good. I did replace the band, though. |

I suppose my G-Shock is my "beater" watch, since that's what I wear on the weekend when I do stuff that's most likely to damage it. Since it's an "atomic" it's also my most accurate watch. I think it was about $65.
