I'm 45mi outside DC itself. Out in (what used to be) the cow fields.

Not much 'bike culture' out here.

See, I discovered the joy of cycling caps in the past couple years and I like mine on hot days... I'm a heavy sweater and it helps keep things out of my eyes. Also makes the helmet more comfortable. And gives my wife one more thing to scoff at.

My Dad still has that exact helmet. He used to never wear a helmet late 70's early 80's but one day he hit a pothole and had to take a trip to the emergency room.

I can't believe people still refuse to wear them. I have cracked a helmet at least four times. Better a helmet than my skull

SpokeValley, Skid Lid right? Looked ok at the time but protection was poor.

I'm certainly pro-helmet and to each his own. But the Poc only gets uglier to me, ugh.

Skid Lid indeed! and protection was way better than the leather hairnets which were the standard in 1980.
Bell Biker came along and offered improved protection, sure, but Skid Lid won on style points!
(I applied red reflective tape stripes on the diagonal on mine, which in retrospect may have been over the top, so to speak. But it was the 80's, after all...)

Right on. Skid Lid indeed! It was the only thing available at the time, but man, was it fugly, and marginal protection.

I gave it away as soon as the Bell Biker came out. As I remember, $32.50 was a stretch for me in 1979.

I got my POC on Saturday. 2 rides later and I can say I now have not just a dorky helmet, but also a hideous one. I'm all in on this thread.

I will not debate helmet use, but my honey used her's 2 weeks ago at 25+ mph and I was a widower for only 10 seconds. The emergency room MD only needed to give her about 15 minutes of attention, he loves helmets. She took 3 days off the bike, we are very lucky.

mkbk, glad to hear the POC is effective. We can argue looks but if it did it's job, super!
