Boy will you be surprised.

friend of mine just got back Saturday from that same cruise. He said there were 14 bicycle related deaths in Amsterdam last year (didn't check his claim). Cars and bikes mix better over there.

Everyone where's a helmet in France? Answer: Everywear! (Sorry, I just had to throw that stupid wordplay out there).

Seriously though, when I toured the Vaucluse region of Provence in 2014, almost everyone wore helmets. During the time I lived in Stuttgart, Germany (2012-2015), 95% of all cyclists wore helmets. It is the land of the abiders after all.

I resemble that remark.

I hit 60 mph mas o meno, several times when I was 17-18 yrs old bombing down the north side of Hawthorne Bld in Palos Verdes. Never wore helmets back then. I just remember tracking next to drivers and asking (screaming) them "what's my speed!!!???!!?!), and hearing back 57, 61, 63, etc. I was stupid back then. Wait a minute, I is stupid front now!!!

Btw, Bill, how lucky were you to be stationed in Sardinia!?!?!? What I would've given to have had an overseas tour during my time in the navy.

Why are the 'helmeted' always outraged when others don't follow their choice?

Visited Japan a couple of weeks ago, mostly smaller cities. People using bikes for transportation and shopping didn't wear helmets and drivers seemed very courteous. Cyclists wore helmets and along with full kits and both arm and leg warmers in 80 deg. weather, looked a bit like Power Rangers. The full coverage may be a justified obsession with sun protection.

Apart from a few months a year in Burgundy I mainly ride in the west of the Netherlands. I tour (long rides at an average speed of 25 km/h) and when I'm on a solo ride I never wear a helmet, when I'm with others I always wear a helmet. In France they don't care whether you wear a helmet or not, in the Netherlands other cyclists on racing bikes tend not to greet back when you greet them. It is their way of "punishing" you for not wearing a helmet. Childish.

It is not clear when one should or should not wear helmets (walking/driving/surfing/cycling/etc). Mostly culture decides when it is reasonable or not to protect your brain.

Although it may not seem like it some times different countries still have different cultures.

My friends just moved to Shanghai, they couldn't even find a place to buy a helmet!

As far as Holland goes, you wear a helmet to ride your racing bicycle, not just for riding to work. Seems sound when you've got the infrastructure and mass they do. If I was riding 10 mph and had as much chance as a pedestrian of getting hit by a car, I wouldn't bother either.

We're a little upset with the possibility of having to help pay for your month-long stay in the Neuro ICU and the 6 month stay in the rehab hospital afterwards...

Other than that, I'm really OK with the possibility of freaking idiots becoming kidney donors.

Sorry, I've had a long day.
