Campagnolo did it first. Sram is garbage, I doubt they have much influence on anything Shimano does. Sram does however influence what others chose not to do.

Get 6800 or 9000, its the best of the Shimano stuff you can get new.

I jumped to 6800 this year and its a big upgrade for me in terms of hood shape and comfort, and upshifts to the big-ring up front are impeccable. Front shifts are up there with 9000 and better than Sram Red.

Between lever ergonomics, front shifting, and pairing with 6800's excellent brakes, that's the direction I would go (and went already).
