My club has been planning a Bay Area trip for this summer. I was on the fence due to budget reasons, but your pic convinced me to go for it.

I give you the slightly less majestic, more glass-strewn trails of Highbridge park (and Richard Sachs bottles):

Both great bikes. The Ridley is more road and race oriented while the Niner is more on the wilderness adventure & bike packing side of things. But a lot of overlap especially with suitable tires. Let me know if you have any questions.

I live in the Bay Area and would really appreciate learning about some of your routes... they all look incredible!

Guys,

After visiting NAHBS I finally decided on a frame for my new Adventure Bike. Now it's time to pick the parts...

Am I crazy for considering a mid-compact 52/36 for a Bay Area Gravel Grinder? I'd be running a 12/29 in the back.

I know this might not make sense, but I much prefer the feel of a bigger chainrings up front... like I have more leverage or something.

depends on what pavement you will be on and how fit you are. You will probably be better of with a compact though but only you will know that.

Duende,

Which frame did you decide on?

Also, with a 36 front; 12/29 in the back is likely not enough for long, steep hills (unless you are an elite athlete).

I would go with a 11-36 in the back, or a triple up front.

Well if I go Titanium, it's gonna be Mosaic. But I've never owned a Ti bike, so I want to do some test rides to confirm its for me.

I'm a diehard campy guy though, so 11/36 is not an option. Based on the advice I've gotten so far it sounds like compact is really the best option.

If I was rich, I'd convert my road bike to mid-compact though!

I'm not rich, but I did convert my road bike to a mid-compact w/11-26 cassette... I like the extra top end, but climbing has gotten to be a little bit more of a grind.

For gravel, I'm riding a compact, 11-28 and would say I am considering a 32 for some of the steeper stuff here in the Bay Area. Guess it all depends on where you end up riding.

Can't wait to see that Mosaic!
