OT: The lost era of long songs & Jams...
Okay, maybe not lost, but in todays processed, canned, auto tuned, prepackaged song era I don't see the progressive improvisational jams or long songs that marked the 60/70's era.
I won't say there isn't anyone doing that today, but I'm not really aware of any bands on that track. What are songs that you remember that top seven/ten minutes or more...past or present? What have you got? For starters: The Allman Brothers - Mountain Jam (33:41) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNuNz2idDtY (Leaving aside politics, the dude can shred the guitar) Ted Nugent - Hibernation (14:36) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M49j05LZ9WY Embrace the feedback, master the feedback, make the feedback work for you... Speaking of immigrant parents, my mom went through my record collection when I was 17. She found a tape by Black Flag and became very concerned. At the time I thought Black Flag took their name from the roach killer and my literal brain never thought about the symbolism or historic context. In any case, my mom was convinced La Negra Bandera was satanic! She visited the local police station and had a detective examine a few of my tapes and CDs. Don't think I found my Black Flag stuff until my mid-20s.

radio cost too much and long jams have a small audience. the other thing that's lost is the ability to play something that's not on some programmers preapproved list. so instead we get various degrees of classic rock..but nothing that's too long.

Grateful dead created the measuring stick atmo. A fine example:

Cream Live at The Grande Ballroom, Detroit October 15, 1967 This is from early in the Cream years, when the Clapton/Bruce/Baker wanted to drive & carry the show competing between themselves on stage. Dimed Marshalls, lousy PA. But this got old 'n' tired fast even for these guys and just as those fleeting moments existed, soon under the weight of expectation, the virtuoso extended jam became something Clapton couldn't run away from fast enough. |

$.02: Cream formed in '66 I think. Dead formed '65 and as far as I know were on the road consistently by '66. Loads of drawn out, long jam-filled shows going back to the dead's beginning. If I'm not mistaken I don't think they were much later than Cream with that type of live approach. I love Cream, I love the dead.
