Professional cycling is a genre that has rarely been brought to the big screen, perhaps largely because the majority hobby is reduced to some European countries, making it difficult to capture the attention of major producers and the general public. If we leave aside the various specialized documentaries that have been rolling on the great champions Eddy Merckx or type on the best races of the world calendar as the Tour de France and Paris-Roubaix, we can almost count on the fingers of one hand. In fact I can only think of three more, but surely there must be others who play a certain way cycling, but hardly any more you get closer to cycling as a profession. The first is Breaking Away (1979) in which four friends prepare to participate in a race that will change the life of one of them, I have been pending for quite some means that at some point end up in the blog. Another that I loved at the time is that of The Triplets of Belleville (2003) , which has the peculiarity to be an animated film set in France in the 30s and we know the history of Champion, a runner preparing for ride the Tour de France, an essential work. A fairly recent is that of The flying Scotsman (2006) in which we tell the story of Graham Obree track runner who came to break the hour record during the nineties with the peculiarity of having done with a bicycle built by himself for he came to use even parts washer. But without a doubt the best that comes to reflect different road cycling intricacies, their myths, their careers, their problems and everything that surrounds it, is what we will discuss today, and also the peculiarity of portraying humble gregarious figure that almost

never wins.
Ghislain Lambert, a peasant's son is a big fan of road cycling, every time he goes to train daydreams that the first to reach the goal and is the winner of a major cycling event. However, for a living should be devoted to smaller jobs such as lifeguard pool, with consequent frustration at not being able to pursue the sport professionally of your dreams. His luck changes in one of her regular workouts, when crossed with the driven Bocodol car, a veteran ex-runner and currently manager of modest cycling team Magicreme, sponsored by the Small Business cleaning products, and that gives you the opportunity to try to earn their place in the pack.
Since his first race, despite Ghislain give everything, realizes that reality is much harder than previously thought, the level of their opponents despite being smaller races left in evidence sliding down sooner desirable of the leading group. Soon turning him into a gregarious team in serving their leader Fabrice Bouyion, who always takes the applause and admiration of the girls and consideration of the manager, he always running in the background and not relegated to contest wins . Ricardo Fortuna, an Italian veteran running all the secrets of the profession is known, is entirely its roommates in various displacements of the team, being his great counselor over the years and who puts you first contact Once the doping (hilarious scene), which allows you to try to stand out in a grueling sport, and a brutal to get rid of the obligation to serve Fabrice competition. The film looks back over the years that Ghislain is within the professional field, where we witness the problems he has to deal, the hopes placed after hard workouts, broken dreams and if he can finally participate in the race for excellence in cycling: The Tour de France.

The film is of Belgian nationality and that means that we could say it is the birthplace of cycling, with a fondness dunk in this sport as much or more going on here with football. Despite being a band of cycling is not essential to be a follower of the sport to enjoy it, because it has enough points of interest to the profane can move well. The story takes us in the 70s where the great ruler of the moment was Eddy Merckx, nicknamed "The Cannibal" for wanting to win it all, another plane is Ghislain, a modest runner who barely stands on occasion and through which we can take a tour through cycling of those years, but well recreated in all its aspects: setting, jerseys of famous teams like Bic or Molteni , careers, etc ...

In tone dramedy, we have hilarious moments like the first time that dopa, where his partner injects an exaggerated dose of amphetamines and reaches the start of the race completely flush with a rush that makes me laugh, while in others Stripes pathos as after a hard fall when viewed from the bar all blue in the face as his dreams away. It has details that define very well the suffering of the sport with races that are running even at night, hard workouts and the frustration of defeat or multiple falls or injuries. The problem of doping is not hidden and displayed as a present reality in high-level sport (not just cycling), having a very cinephile detail for my liking and I comment now: in this sport have come often news about doctors involved or suspected of doping practice brokers as Dr. Ferrari Dr. Conconi or Euphemianus Dr. Fuentes. Well here it had to be a guru doping and name Dr. Mabuse (the same name as the evil genius of evil created by Fritz Lang in one of his best works of the same title). theme also touched advertising and sponsors, the first team Ghislain forced him to sell the houses cleaning of your brand, and do not miss what they plan by the end of the film to earn a few extra minutes of free publicity (great!). As with all sports, the managers also come in more than one occasion take advantage of athletes they represent and here taking the role Claude Ghislain older brother. Yet we have an exciting, funny and sad movie at a time, with a good balance to be a comedy and yet convey a credible image of the sport to be able to grasp its essence by some gifted runner who only base perseverance and stubbornness to keep going even though everything will finally sprout evil, a sort of Mr. Bean bicycle by a parallel search. Good performances from all of them to finish to give consistency to a film that won, I think deservedly won Best Screenplay at the San Sebastian Film Festival 2001. Finally I leave you a phrase I read the director and I think it is perfectly the spirit of the film: " Ghislain Lambert and Eddy Merckx born on the same day with only 8 minutes apart, since then, the gap between the two has not stopped growing . "

Jack has been working with Horse Cycles for the past 6 months or so. He came on board to learn the process of frame building and lend his skills to the shop. Throughout his time he has helped in the large effort of moving the shop, worked on repairs, assembled build kits and most recently just finished welding up a bar steam combo for his track bike.
Jack recently showed more of a comittment to frame building as he flew out to Oregon to take a frame building class at UBI. He should be back in the next few days and we’re all excited to see what he comes back with. Jack will continue to help out at the shop, honing his skills as a frame builder and working on colaberitive projects with Horse in the future.
Look out for him on the bridges of Manhattan, streets of Brooklyn, and hopefully on the polo courts in china town. A super strong rider with an even stronger passion for the craft, Jack continues to contribute to the Horse Cycles Workshop and to the bike community as a whole.

Finally, we come to a derailleur system which reigned supreme for many years and, with the application of new technology and materials, could be revived in the future. I refer to the Osgear, the design of which spawned many similar systems. It dominated the pre-war scene and continued briefly into the double chainwheel era.

Its success was simple, efficient design. Made in bronze, it is the only mechanism that could be bent, straightened and re-bent - often to the rider's advantage! A few inches forward of the rear cluster the chain ran between a twin-pronged fork-like derailing device. As the gear lever was operated the fork turned and shifted the chain laterally from one sprocket to the next.

Chain tension was maintained by a trailing, long, spring-loaded single jockey arm, secured beneath the bottom bracket over which the chain passed.

Unlike other derailleurs of the time, and anticipating the index systems of today, the change lever had definite stops. However, the lever was taken by the cyclist slightly beyond its correct stop until the change was made, then it would be eased back into the correct retaining notch. A bit fiddly to set up, but once done, the Osgear was virtually indestructible and trouble-free in operation. In the latter part of the 1930s it was the derailleur par excellence, and extensively used by pros, amateurs and cyclists in general.

The Osgear could work reasonably well with a double chainwheel if the jockey arm were sufficiently long, but the double-jockey designs of Simplex and Huret worked that much better. Only Bartali and his team continued to use an Osgear variation up to 1951, after which they switched to the, then new, Campagnolo Gran Sport.

Numerous advantages could be had with the Osgear. There were no damage-inviting protrusions, the chain-wrap was excellent, and taking the rear wheel out didn't involve dealing with a gear mechanism as well.

The British Cyclo Company introduced a similar design called the Ace. It had a disturbingly short and unattractive jockey arm and an awkward twin cable push-pull system.

A pre-war Italian version of the Osgear had a much longer jockey arm than the French Super Champion and the forked chain shifter mounted above the chainstay instead of beneath.

/ Vin Denson post pee

WARM COFFEE ON A COLD RIDE / http://onthebummel.wordpress.com/201...offeecoldlegs/

Now when I go for a long old ride, or even a short one for that matter, there is one thing I never really feel the need to worry about, and that’s nature’s call for relieving the bladder. I don’t race (yet to have found a racing club where a 3-speed hub and balloon tyres would not place me at a massive disadvantage), and therefore the need to pee on the run is not necessary. I can just hop off my bike, and with my red rear light flashing like a bizarre bunny’s tail just bounce into a bush and do my business.

Imagine however you are a super domestique, your livelihood rests on a successful ride in the second half of a champion’s grand plan to ride and win the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré (an 8 day stage race) followed a couple of hours later by the longest day classic the Bordeaux-Paris (560km give or take). You don’t really have time to be caught short. Least of all when a trapped nerve makes peeing difficult.

It clearly only happens to the best of us, as thus did Vic Denson suffer in 1965 when helping Jacques Anquetil to his Dauphine / Bordeaux-Paris double.

/

Vic (really Vincent but the Frenchies thought it better to call him that rather than the French for wine), after supporting the somewhat pooped Jacques since the early morning start, and chasing down pretty much every break so as to wear out the opposition for his captain’s benefit, found that he needed to pee. Every time he would stop, someone would dash off on a break and force the poor chap to mount his steel steed and pursue full speed.

In the end the toughest man will break and say enough is enough. Vic called his Derny pacer (Bordeaux – Paris was one of the few one days to use them) to pull over, dashed off to the side of the road and…and…and…nothing. There was water water everywhere but not a drop of Vin.

The poor chap had trapped a nerve and what with the pressures of the ride could not relieve a reservoir that had been building for more than half a day.

The race was getting away, and with it Vic’s role. In the end he turned to the only thing that could help – stimulants.

His support chaps turned up passed over a sponge soaked in warm coffee, which applied in the affected area aided immensely, opening a breach in the reservoir which while rapidly emptying still placed Vic at the back of the peloton, but mightily at peace.

Empty, he shook off his shoes, mounted his wheels and raced off to help his captain’s bid for glory. In the end, Vic secured sixth place for himself and fastest lap around the Parc des Princes (Paris). Even better, team mates Anquetil (who incidentally won) and Stablinksi his teammate with Ford-France handed over their winnings.

Sooo…anyway…lesson here for all cyclists: if after a long ride, make some coffee, add a little milk and then apply said coffee with sponge for instant relief.
