Nice find! The El Jefe looks interesting. There are some number of alternatives. Seeking mostly for the odd mini-epics in the saddle. Top tube bosses too.
This caught my eye. UK to US shipping? This may be a non-starter. https://wildcat.cc/products/drj0n-barnacle Looking forward to the review from ldamelio.

A related question but different
In cases where the tube does not have be drilled or have a hole added is it possible to use an adhesive to attach a boss? I am thinking of cable stops or shifter bosses on older steel frames. Do these have to be brazed or will a modern super glue or JB weld hold them sufficiently?

I don't remember shipping being too bad (but I don't remember where I bought them - IIRC a few UK-based shops sell the parts). |

Installing rivnuts is easy if the holes are already there...I removed a set of rusted/loose mounts on a Seven frame and it took more time to get the old ones out than to install the new ones... looks as good as new.

Totally true. Establishing a centerline is the toughest part. Practice on a bike you don't care about (Lenton frame was free, though I do love noodly old 531).

So you’re saying I could just drill and install rib nuts on the TT and beneath the DT of my fair light to add the missing bosses?
What about on the seatstays? Sounds like that might not be as good an idea… |

Cool thread, I didn't even know such "bosses" existed. I am currently trying to solve the problem caused by me not having a single boss made at the rear of the seat-tube for a fender to attach (on a frame without a seat stay bridge), and this king cage universal support bolt seems perfect for that. I probably just need to make sure I have some helicopter tape (and maybe also some old inner tube piece?) beneath it to protect the tape.

yes, to a point. Give me a shout tonight after work and we can talk thru your options. And we can find a time to get you up here to do it if you want

I'd only drill holes in a frame you don't care much about.

You can find a picture on the internet of almost anything you want to. Many, many frames out there with rivnut bottle bosses without issue.

Well, I had a frame crack at a rivnut and later iterations of that frame did not use rivnuts. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and my judgement and experience is that an unreinforced hole (rivnuts don't provide adequate reinforcement) in a thin walled tube is a stress riser and given enough miles on a frame could cause a fatigue crack.

I’m sure that CAN happen, but my experience with literally dozens of thin wall aluminum Cannondale frames from the mid-late 80’s would seem to indicate that it seldom does. Never seen or heard of frame damage as pictured.
Riv nuts that get loose and spin around, making it difficult to remove a bottle cage bolt? Sure…but not even many of those. Not sure I’d want to use one on a carbon frame, tho. |
