If your frame/fork has the clearance, I recommend these tires:

My own design, built on a 3-day one-on-one session with Dave Levy at Ti Cycles:

Slack front end, loads of front-center and trail, low BB, 26" MTB wheels, disc brakes. Ultra stable, no-hands at anything 10mph and up. Clearance for 2" tires rear, 2.5" up front, fender clearance (obviously). MicroShift shifters and FD, 105 RD, Velo Orange seatpost, Fizik Gobi saddle, Dimension stem and compact bars, Origin 8 headset, Gossamer cranks and BB, Avid BB-5 brakes, Jagwire cables.

Best bike I've ever ridden.

Got these on my Black Mountain monster cross and they ROCK (n'roll)! I actually bought the BMC frameset just to fit these tires, which I already had and couldn't fit on any other of my bikes. Mike helped me set up my monster cross with these tires and all the rest of the bits to make a great gravel grinder. Mine was posted WAY earlier in this thread.

Here's another fun gravel rig. More cruiser than racer, but nice and comfy at the Dirty Kanza this year. The fatty tires and flat bar were rock solid on the decents.

A lot of people use CX bikes to ride gravel, but in an ideal world the only similarities between the two should be durability and the ability to take 30mm plus tires.

In my eyes, a gravel bike should have distance road bike geometry + room for fat tires. The "sport touring" bikes of yesterday, essentially. Proper CX racing bikes have high BBs and more aggressive geometry, not what I want to ride for 50-100 bumpy miles...

Long distance gravel rides/races have gained so much popularity that some manufactureres (Raleigh most notably) are actually producing gravel specific road bikes. Are they necessary? Of course not...but I think it's great.

ahhh...so Gravel Grinding Races/rides are typically much longer in distance than a cyclocross race? that would make sense in terms of geometry differences between the two.

Dueling Signals from the Chris King Gourmet Century. Mine is the black one, I threw on some Grifo XS tires on the ride and they performed great!

So a gravel bike generally has more relaxed angles than a cross bike? Interesting...did not know that...
