It is indeed the worst. When I moved from NYC to RVA I had a broken leg! It was decidedly inconvenient!

I will likely do so as well this year, and I'm not looking forward to it.

There is, however, one silver lining. It's a great opportunity to throw away, give away, and sell stuff. It's an chance to at least start with a simpler and less cluttered life.

Yup it does, and I feel your pain. I hope not to repeat the process... ever again.

We moved 500 miles in Aug of 21. 2 trips in the Mini with bikes and tools. Final trip in a jam packed 26' U-Haul pulling a trailer with the Mini and tandem. My wife followed with our 5 cats. After spending 11 months in a studio apartment, we finally unpacked and settled in.

Quite the relief to be done, and I'm enjoying a slower and more relaxed life. Just focus on your end goal. It'll be worth it.

After a certain age, it just plain hurts.

I brought up the topic of downsizing just this morning. My hope was my wife had recovered from her last move (Seattle to Petaluma in '02). Nope! Gonna have to happen eventually.

We have moved 12 times in the course of our marriage--two international (with a kind of half way back between), one from west coast to east coast and a few partials in between.

Most the big moves were corporate relo's, the last full move from B'lynn to where we have put down roots was (mostly) professional--but in between I have driven U-Hauls cross-country (and local) packed and unpacked multiple PODS, warehoused/stored and un-stored stuff. Also last minute renovations/painting/cleanup on houses being sold, and (oddly?) -- having to do the same on the house that we have just moved into...

Yes moving sucks. Even when someone does most of the heavy lifting (literal and figurative) it is still exhausting. Breakdown/sort/big think takes weeks -- setup/find critical stuff/get services re-established takes weeks. Throw in changed shopping patters, services and maybe a foreign language--and it can be one of the biggest time sucks you can get involved in.

We’re moving twice this year, really didn’t do much unpacking after the first leg XC move. Now we bought a house and are moving again after we close. Only bonus is we have 3 months left on our short term rental and can move at our leisure.

I've moved six times in the last 20 years, twice across the country in the last three years. Moving sucks.

That said, find me my current job and pay with decent housing back down in the Santa Barbara area (Santa Ynez valley) and I'll start looking at moving companies tomorrow...

Moving Sucks

Agreed. I’ve moved from Oregon to Connecticut and back, Oregon to Phoenix and back, and multiple times locally around Portland. I’ve found that local moves suck more. Long distance moves require a level of planning and organization that can be skipped when moving locally. Last time we moved about 15 miles and there were no rental vans available so I wound up borrowing a warehouse delivery van and making three trips. That sucked.

I have bad ideas…

Lemme see.. since Feb 2020 I've moved seven times.

And somehow I'm still married and (mostly) sane.

I don't recommend it.

Funny! I'm about to move to a new place too, and also have a Mini Cooper! Hey, I have been looking at the Mini-branded towers and Crossbars. I have the roof rails. Are you pretty satisfied with these? (sorry for thread drift) Edit: Flite saddles, too-- what are we brothers? Haha
