Campy compact BB question

Upgrading from Std 53/39 Record 8 speed. To a Mirage 50/34. Exist. BB Phil Woods 102 square taper. LBS says I need 111, but I did same conversion on another bike a few years back with no new BB. Will the 102 work?

Thanks as always.
Glenn

If the Mirage is like a Centaur, and I think it is, and you're talking square taper, then it takes a 111 symetrical (as opposed to the 111 asymetrical for triples). The 102 is for Chorus and Record. So 102 would be too close in both sides.

Yeah I get that, but my old Campy guy did the upgrade before without a new BB. I'm asking IF it will work, not what the book says.

102 is record and chorus only. Everything below is 111mm.

You need 111mm

I used a centaur on a single speed with a 102 and the crank nearly hit the stays without a little ring.

It will not work. You need the 111mm. And your old Campy guy did not do it without a new bb unless he is a sorcerer who can add 9mm to existing bbs.

Thanks all for the input, LBS tried the assembly which is how they found the conflict. Guess mo old guy slipped a new BB in on me without me knowing it .

So is there an Italian thread Record 111 BB or Phil Woods or am I stuck with a lesser BB?

The record 111mm is asymmetric and not what you need.

Your options are basically Phil woods, centaur, veloce, older campy, or campy ac-h. There are others, but these are easy to find.

Don't worry about lesser, the 111mm centaur is a great bottom bracket. I'm actually using a veloce 111mm and it is very smooth and reliable. It has less seal drag than ultra torque too.

The only nitpick with the veloce and ac-h bottom bracket is the tool. It uses an skf style tool. The centaur will use the same tool the other one comes out with.

The Record Pista version is 111mm symmetrical, unlike the version for the
triple road crank. I haven't used the combo with a Mirage crank,
but i don't see why it wouldn't work, and it should be easy to find
in Italian thread.

Nope, need 111 for Centaur, Daytona, Athena, Veloce and mirage.

You already have the answer to your question since the LBS tried to make it work but......

I'll dissent from the rest and say that it could be possible on some frames. For example, I'm using an old Campy MTB crank that calls for a long spindle (I've seen both 124 and 132 mentioned) on a 102mm BB and it clears the stays fine. I'm only running two chainrings though I did mount it on a 115 first and there was room for the granny ring. It may not be a direct correlation but it just goes to show that spindle lengths aren't always set in stone.
