neck stuff

After a hiatus due to hip surgery I spent some time off the bike before and after hip replacement. My pencil neck is sore holding my head up on longer rides Suggestions for strengthening this area?

raise your bars

maybe your neck doesn't like all those pounds dangling from it in that slammed position.

Hit up YouTube for some neck strengthening exercises. It's mostly a football thing as far as I know.

Or better yet, make an appointment with an athletic trainer or PT and get some exercises/input from them. A hip replacement is somewhat commonplace these days but it's a serious medical procedure. The neck and hip could be related in some way, and if that's the case you'd be better off addressing it all, and sooner.

Excercises-

I agree with strengthening exercises, but you should also look at your posture off the bike- particularly sitting in chairs, couches, etc..
This can be a big culprit.

Just commenting to someone we need to replace our office chairs. They are terrible. I find myself going to a new Volvo to sit in late in the day(work at a Volvo dealership part time).

I'll second the notion of talking to and working with a trainer. Core and upper body exercises will be big, especially after the down time and healing from the hip surgery. Longer healing can often lead to asymmetry in your general posture, and odds are good you have some lingering compensation going on. Spend some time getting your trunk and upper body straight and strong.
