Paul Racer M center pull - center mount

And

Paul Racer center pull - post mounts

Really appreciate the modulation and plenty of power.

Those Compass center pull brakes look really nice as well.

Tektro 926AL Mini-V with upgraded Kool Stop Cross Pads so I can use any road shoe. It's a cheap combo that works like a charm.

TRP CX8.4 mini V-brakes.

No need to ever go back to cantis after using these.

i have various increased clearance rim brakes in use, all work acceptably well.

-paul cantis
-trp calipers
-tektro calipers
-VO calipers

all will clear a 33c tire, no problem.

Many thanks to all for the information. I'm happy to see that I have many options.

SO, is it crazy for me to NOT want to use disc brakes on a gravel bike?? Honestly I don't see an over whelming advantage to disc brakes (for my situation that is)

I love my Fierte.

The only way I would ever part with this bike for something else would be to move to discs or something that could handle larger tires.

The big question that will generate multiple pages of opinions.

Yes, maybe, no.

Do you need to clear wide (>55mm) fenders and/or mud buildup?.. if so, cantis. If not, calipers are fine. If needing greatest stopping power, V or mini-V.

Coolstop (thinline if longevity not an issue), salmon pads in whatever type of rim brake. :-)

If I had unlimited resources and was buiding an entirely new bike (something I seldom have the opportunity to do), I would have a disc equipped bike just to check it out. Probably mechnical because the aesthetics (and cost) of the hyro's does not float my boat...right now.

Cheers

IMO for gravel bikes, why not go disc? Seems to be a decent way forward. No clearance issues, etc.

The biggest benefit to discs over cantis/mini-V-brakes is when the weather changes and things aren't sunny and dry.

Till then, you have a ton of rim-brake only wheels to choose from for relatively inexpensively.

I too had that same debate. Went with of campy drivetrain (of course) - but they dont make mid-reach brakes. So, I ended up with the Tektro R737's
(47 - 59 mm) and it has the P422 pad. Totally glad I did.

If money weren't an issue, I would go for a disc-equipped bike that allowed me to run fat tires on 27.5 rims and skinnier-but-still-wide tires on 700c rims.

But money is always an issue (for me, at least), so I'm happy with prowling the used market and for me, that also means the simplicity of rim brakes.
