Those scams have been on eBay for awhile now.
It really bothers me that eBay uses Fort Knox x 1000 security measures to prevent buyers and sellers from communicating "too much" (i.e. offline transactions, in which eBay/PP make $0), but then allow this kind of crap to constantly perpetuate. I used to flag those listing; I no longer do so, because there can easily be 15 or so of them for a single category at any one time. eBay is BS now. . . |

Yes, I've see these and was wondering about the same thing. Usually a pretty desirable bike with a low starting bid, and then this same message underneath. Surprised eBay doesn't catch on.

This has been around for awhile. Stolen ebay account with no link to the paypal. So you send a message they respond back with a paypal link that they have access to which is also probably stolen. With draw funds, then you file a claim that you never received the goods and the account is now abandoned, with the thief making off with the funds.

5secs of searching brought up the actual bike that was once forsale by Gran Fondo bikes in Tenn. ( not this Merckx, but you can tell the photo/camera style)
See the wood panel background and the faux granite table top? |

A Thor Hushovd autographed 585 with the same style / language has been up for quite awhile. Like new with Dura Ace for $1050 US.

I am also a Hammond organ fan and there is a B3/Leslie combo on ebay with the same scam ad and even the same prices.

Better late than never. If eBay is relying solely on outside parties flagging the advertisements, they'll always be too late - I doubt everyone who sees a dubious ad flags it, and almost everyone is going to get tired of flagging ads after a while. |

I think the problem with eBay is that they have no real human beings in fraud prevention monitoring the ads--in the name of reduced head count, they rely on algorithms etc--but these slip through since they are done with stolen account IDs for sellers with decent feedback.
They have announced the new "outside links" policy--so in theory that stops some fraud but it is not fully enforced yet. So eBay's answer is community policing--'hey flag the fraudulent ads for us, since we are too cheap to hire people to do it'. Assholes. If they really wanted to make this work they could at least give free 'eBay Bux' to the person that flagged the most, but nah, they're too cheap to do that either. I've probably flagged a few hundred of these--in categories or searches that I get so mad at all the junk clogging up what I'm trying to look at, but no more. |
