What is your best roadside find?

Hi Folks -

What is the best find while out on a ride? It can be handy, or just plain funny.

I most recently found a 2 pound, short handled sledgehammer. This past year, I have also found a pair of pliers, a pair of snips, and a Phillips screwdriver. I am on a roll with the tools. Hoping my next find will be an impact wrench.

Last year I found a nice Columbia jacket. I've also found my share of "ditch porn". Some pretty weird stuff. Why porn mags seem to wind up by the roadside is beyond me.

My best roadside find was this:

It did not look like that when found. I trash picked this curbside with my dad when I was 12...it's actually a longgggg story.

As far as best find while riding, I picked up a good shape Schwinn Superior with the nervex crank and huret derailleurs that was being trash picked once.

Contentedness and a quiet mind? Does that count?

Ipod

Old style but 64gb version.

Was completely full of nothing but hardcore rap music.

It's now backup storage.

years ago in central coast of cal: a vegetable truck that hit a nasty bump and dropped a ton of lettuce along the way out the back. i was sitting on side of road trying to rest, bonking hard (was hard 100+ mile day in bad heat, and out of water), so hard i could not see straight and could not turn pedals more than a few hundred feet at a clip. still had 4-5 miles to get home. it was like manna from heaven, and that was best salad i ever had in my life.

i ended up hitchhiking home, bike in back of pickup truck. yeah, the bonk was so bad i was kinda delirious. will never forget it. young and foolish, oh well. hindsight it could have actually been really bad situation.

I think we can file this under ···!?!

On my early morning ride today I did a double take on something I spotted in the road. "No way!" I turn back around....yup. Let's just say on the rest of the way home motorists were giving me a very wide berth.

Heavy rattan/wax wood shaft and a solid metal head and tip. This does not feel like a Halloween prop. Probably a Chinese MA demo spear.

What have you found on the road lately?

William

Two prisoners escaping from the local county lock-up. Not even kidding.

A spear might have been handy for that one!

Strangest thing I've ever seen. Two guys in bright orange jumpsuits just crossing the road a couple hundred feet in front of us, coming out of the brush at a dead sprint and then back into the woods on the other side.

My buddy and I were dumbfounded until we got a bit up the road and saw the county jail sign pointing off the road.

Locked iPhone...managed to track down the owner on Facebook as he had an unusual name.

Android phone dropped a few hours earlier, not locked so I called "Home".

Contents of a wallet spread out a couple hundred feet down and across the road...multiple credit cards, etc.

Kershaw Leek (pocket knife) was the most useful find. Fossil watch the most valuable?

Oakly M-Frames though that was trail side. I did the right thing and asked around on the local list serves and bike shops and no one claimed them so... Score!

Funny thing is about a year later I lost them on the road some where. I posted here on the forum and a kind gentlemen said he had a set of M-Frames that he found on the road and sent them to me free

About $220 in cash lying in the road. Thought it was a deck of cards at first, glad I doubled back to take a look.

Shoes, followed by a liquor bottle and then some various undergarments and a condom wrapper.

I found an iPhone and eventually got it back to the owner, she gave me a 20, I tried to refuse but she insisted.

A 24 inch Rigid aluminum pipe wrench. Thankfully, it was only about a mile from my house, but I did get some strange looks from people on the way home.
In second place I found my own drivers license, which I had dropped six or seven months before.
