Fallbrook / Temecula / Oceanside - Need a place to ride

Heading down to Fallbrook this weekend and need to get in a 40 mile ride. Doesn't have to be climbing - in fact I would prefer flatter since it's triathlon specific training. Looking for 40 miles so a 20 mile out and back would be ideal so I don't have to follow any crazy directions. Thanks for any recommendations!

It will be HOT away from the coast so up/down along the beach will be best. Check to see if you can ride through Camp Pendleton.

Flat is not the speciality in that area, but if you want it, take a look at the San Luis Rey and 76 bike paths. They aren't as overrun with slower recreational riders as most of our MUPs and you should be able to work out 40 from Fallbrook fairly easily. Depending on time of day, you should get a decent push in one direction.

IF and that's a big one Pendleton is open, bring an ID with you. The Marines are/were insistent on that. Worst case, there's the shoulder of the 5 if you insist on going north

There is an online signup that you are supposed to fill out now to ride through. IMO it has nothing to offer. I stay on the 5 shoulder instead (in both directions,) it is faster without the wait at the gate and also flatter. Counter intuitively, it is also safer, as the only major incident/death we've had was on the base. I'd skip the base entirely - if you come all the way out to the coast, just ride on it.

Now the weather is predicted to be cooler by the weekend but I would still prefer the climate near the beach unless you can ride early in the morning.

I lived there about twenty years ago when it was still developing, so I'm sure there have been some changes. I used to ride from Temecula through DeLuz, via Sandia Creek in to Fallbrook. From there you head east, cross over the 15 in to Rainbow, take Rice Canyon down to Temecula.
That's probably a little less the forty miles you were looking for, and it's not flat either. DeLuz is quiet, very little traffic because it's mostly avocado and citrus groves. Fallbrook is rural as well and has some beautiful roads that are canopied by massive Live Oaks.
