Tragically Hip Content
Not sure if there are any Hip fans here, but if you haven't already heard, Gord Downey passed away at 53.

Wow, so young. Tragically Hip was so under appreciated.

A Canadian icon. Not particularly my cup of tea, but an icon for sure. RIP

this guy I know here who works for Great Lakers Brewing Co. LOVES The Hip. Has a couple tats, his license plate and wears t-shirts from them all the time. He's gotta be broken.

Mountain of sadness this morning with this news. I've been a massive Hip fan since the early days. I think I saw them first in 1988 (+/- a year). Saw them many times after that. Gord was a true Canadian icon. So many great songs. Even though we all knew this day was coming it sure doesn't make it any easier. My thoughts to his family. Thank You Gord. RIP.

Yeah, it's nuts. You can't turn a radio station on in Ontario today without hearing a Tragically Hip song.

Sad news. He was one of the best. Amazing lyrics. Was turned on to them in the 90's, by a Canadian. Amazing in concert too. He will be missed.
One of the best poet / rock stars ever. When he would sing he would be "all in", and every emotion and feeling you could clearly see. It was a gift to have seen him perform, RIP |

We all knew today was coming, but it still hurts. I was hoping Gord would hold on longer. Even watching the Kingston show last year you could see how it was affecting him. As much as I enjoyed it, it was really sad to see.
I’ve been a fan since day for night came out. I regret, I only saw them live once, but am happy I did get the chance to go. I’ve been listening to all their albums today at work. |

I've seen the hip / Gord Downie multiple times.
A few memories 1) At a weird club in Toldeo, the club actually ran out of beer and we were knee deep in beer cans. This was in 1993 or 1994, we actually stayed in the same cheap motel they were in and ran into them at the mcdonalds for breakfast. 2) At a charity event with only 200 people in a barn. This was 2 years ago 3) Gord Downie solo at a charity dinner, with dancers and other musicians, made the typically horrible event great. This was 5 or 6 years ago. 4) With the Sadies, in a barn with 200 people. This was 3 years ago 5) At the old Ontario Place forum - first time I saw them, Gord got fixated on talking to his shoes. This was in 1990 or so. Its odd here, every radio station is now all hip all the time. |

As a Canadian, his impact is significant. In Toronto tonight there will be a moment of silence before the Leafs game. He wrote 50 Mission Cap about the death of a rookie - Bill Barilko - who scored the winning goal in the last Leaf Stanley Cup championship. There's a specificity and intimacy in that song that he and the Hip could manage despite their success: Gord Downie was a rock icon but he was just a good guy from Kingston, too. RIP man. He was a seriously decent dude.

We down south of the border miss some of this really good music. Another icon, Great Big Sea went down. I just heard of this guy from Canadian colleague - good stuff and certainly a better human being. President Trudeau has tears down both his eyes doing commentary this morning.
