Not sure if you are looking for frame builders or specific bikes built up for component ideas...
but check out these builders: http://www.chapmancycles.com/ http://www.mapbicycles.com/ |

I would place an order if he'd take it though. FWIW I would definitely check out Joel at Clockwork. I love what he's up to and it won't annihilate your checkbook. https://www.flickr.com/photos/clockw...ool-599988@N21 Last edited by gomango; 04-08-2017 at 12:49 PM. |

Peter Weigle is a master at this. If you're looking for inspiration, look at his Flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/49353569@N00/ If you're looking for pictures of beautiful Rene Herse & Alex Singer bikes, try Kick My-Pan's Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kickmypan/ |

I would also dig though Eric Estlund's Flickr for ideas.

A couple of my faves in terms of classic typical rando bikes:
https://janheine.files.wordpress.com...ereirafull.jpg https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...2c45f06708.jpg As much as that Cervelo setup looks brutal, over the years I've realized that I just hate riding most by the book rando bikes and would way rather ride a real road bike if I have like 0-15 lbs of stuff on a really long ride. Just my opinion obviously but after putting thousands of miles on a low trail, squishy, flexy, planing rando bike I decided these things look better than they ride. If I were going out to buy a rando bike today, I'd skip the usual suspects and buy a Breadwinner B-Road, Endpoint Coffee Grinder or maybe that cool looking new production Tomii with normal road geo but that's obviously just my opinion. |

Thank goodness all of your bikes are a touch large for me.
Eliminates temptations when you rotate the stable. Simply gorgeous, for sure. |

After finishing my dawn breakfast in Loudeac, I went out to the empty courtyard save a gathering around one bike generating some teenage boy type excitement. The gathering around the bike was impressive. Jan has this little gizmo on the stem that turns the light on if I remember right. I thought that was nice. Everything was clean and tidy. The beauty of this bike is how old it is and that it almost went under 50 hours at PBP but that is just my aesthetics. I suppose his bike has the same appeal as an old SL300 gullwing. Timeless.
The only retro rando bikes that get me excited by look are the JP Weigle bikes. They are functional works of art. I do brevets and grand randonnees on all sorts of bikes including full on racing bikes. Comfort is key for me. I seriously doubt anyone has a more comfortable one than the following. The woundup touring fork, magnesium frame, Brooks saddle, Specialized CG-R seatpost, carbon bars, cushy tires, and aero bars make for a plush ride. Not pretty or visually inspirng but this rig is my ideal of a modern randonneuring bike. IIRC it was setup for a wet 1200k or something like that. |

OP, are you looking for a builder or just advice on what components to use?
I favor the trad rando stuff that e-Ritchie once called "Civil War reenactment" bikes or something similar. HAHAHA If you're looking for a build (or just eye candy), look at Cooper Cycles (Portland, OR), Weigle, the Nobilette bikes that Mark N makes for Velo Cult, Bishop, Fitz, Norther, Terraferma, Johnny Coast, or peruse the back issues of Bicycle Quarterly, Jan's blog or the site. Unfortunately, probably about 1/3 to 1/2 of the builders that BQ recommended at the time of print are no longer an option. For "production" framesets, there's, the Boulder, Box Dog, the Soma Grand Rando (had one, didn't care much for it), Velo Routier. If discs are your thing, PM me and I have some info I can share offline. For components, think silver. Some people poo-poo DT shifters, others say no intergrated shifters, so go with whatever you like. The big names to consider beyond Shimano and Campy are Nitto, Suntour, Simplex, Herse, Mafac, Grand Bois, Honjo, Berthoud, SunXCD and probably loads of other stuff I'm missing. Some would say Velo Orange, but I generally avoid them, although the Zeppelin fenders are pretty great. For pics, there are a tons of great photos online. Search Flickr, the BQ archives, the Radavist, Boys on the Hoods, many others.
