I think it's rare for people to think they are racing others while randonneuring, it's more of a race against the clock. Randonneurs don't generally try to drop each other on an event. OTOH, randonneurs probably aren't going to burn too many matches to keep up with a group that is faster than them. Racers will stick together under conditions where randonneurs probably wouldn't. You get used to ebb and flow of a ride, and getting dropped doesn't mean you won't see those people again. I have seen people put their finish in jeopardy to stay with another rider that they have never ridden with before. Having been a racer in my past, randonneuring has a strange dynamic.

Well. I do know that PA roads are rough and the ups and downs are sharp and I have had a hard time on the descents keeping up with the gentleman in question....on the descents. He on 44 mm and me bumping and sliding on 25 mm tires. Those hills in the Poconos before Hawks Nest.

I'm of the view to pick the narrowest tires that match the roads. In PA, 25 mm does not work well from comfort, speed or descending ability. 32-35 mm is the sweet spot for me on those roads.

The guy who owns Compass tires rode wide tires in PBP, he was not too slow.

yes, 650b is still a minority choice among randonneurs, fast and slow

Agreed.

A lot of factors affect people's equipment choices. Objective evaluation of what is fastest being only one of many, and probably not very high on the list with most people.

But just because something is not particularly common doesn't make it a poor choice.

Agreed. I am on 32mm tires on my distance machines.
