Have they fixed the Thomson X2 cracked face plate issue?
Are the Thomson X2 faceplates any less prone to cracking these days?

AFAIK nothing changed in the design or material. Just a running change from M4 bolt heads to M3.
There was a new version called the G2 which used T25 bolts and possibly a slightly different design but that seemed to have dissappear entirely from the internet. Not sure it even went into production. |

Is Thomson so set in their ways that they're avoiding change? No long setback post either...

I still can't wrap my head around why a Thomson seatpost, bought from an e-tailer in Germany or such, is cheaper than purchased here in the US.

I had X2 stems on two bikes and I've had no issues. I had an X4 on my cross bike and at some point the faceplate snapped while the bike was leaning against the garage wall. The X4 was older and I noticed a difference in hardware between the X4 and X2. I use a feeler gage to match the gap top and bottom on the X2.

Had a Silver 2X stem face plate snap on a bike hanging on the wall in the middle of the night. Had it replaced by Thomson free of charge and so far no further issues.

I've had an X2 faceplate crack and I've had the bars slip repeatedly.

I had the same with an X2 cracking on a track bike that was sitting in storage.
Never again. |

They break, period. Pretty sure Thomson has discontinued that version.

I emailed them last summer due to a similar issue.
They said a new road stem is in production which they expect by winter (2023). But I don’t see anything on their site. They offered a 50% discount if I send in the old stem. |

As much as I like a deal, MAP makes some sense in today's market landscape... it keeps the likes of Amazon and Walmart from gobbling up market share faster than they already have. Last edited by rice rocket; 05-13-2024 at 11:36 PM. |

Hopefully they bring that to market quicker than the setback at the clamp seat post they said they were going to release but never did.
