26 inch tire recs... ?

Building some 26 inch (559 mm, the MTB ones) wheels for my wife's 650c (571 mm) Waterford 1200; I just can't find much in the way of wider tires (for unpaved bike paths) in the 650c size.

It's a standard road bike frame, so can't go really big... although the slightly smaller wheel will give a touch more room between the chainstays... maybe a 'small' 32 at most.

Have seen Conti Gatorskins in 26 inch and approx 28 mm width. Any other recs?

Thanks... that's certainly a super-lightweight option for a ~ 32 mm tire.

But at $78 per, I think my wife would veto.

I believe panaracer paselas come in a 26"x 1.25" or slightly larger and are at least half the price of the compass tires. I've run the 32c version with good success.

My wife has those Soma Xpress tires (in 26x1.75") and loves them. Not much or any different than Pasela's, but came in tan/burgundy combo.

I've also had Spec Fatboy 26x1.25" tires in the past. Looks like out of stock online, but maybe your local shop has it. Only $20 on sale.

fat franks are, for me, preferable to paselas in ride and cornering quality, as well as looks. they are, however, 2.3" wide.

And so obviously a no-go. This is a road bike, after all.

Thanks for all the recommendations, folks!

Ritchey Tom Slicks? I think I have a pair of 1.5" (l.4"?) in the basement if you want to give them a try. They sell a 1" as well. In the past some Ritchey tires have been made by IRC and some by Cheng Shin.
