Uploaded my title & drivers license on Mar 12. Documents were accepted today, and got my copy of the buyback document. Signed & notarized and uploaded it at noon; by 1:30 VW had accepted it and sent me a "schedule your buyback appointment" email.

While that was going on I went down to the dealer, test drove and ruled out a 6MT, and found an Alltrack equipped exactly as I wanted it (silver SE DSG w/DAP) which I'll pick up tomorrow. They'll hold my car at their storage facility until April 12, at which time the formal buyback will take place.

Absolutely no fuss whatsoever, and no delays. And I'll end up getting more for the TDI than I paid for it.

What was it about the 6MT that made you rule it out? Just curious, as I'm still a little, little bit open to a DSG.

After my experience going to the Shenandoah Fall Festival last October, where I was stuck in a 60 minute traffic jam getting onto I-66 at the Beltway and a 40 minute traffic jam getting off I-66 at I-81 in the Valley, I'd almost given up the idea. But, I remembered how much I enjoyed the 5MT in my 91 Saab 900, and I though it was worth one last try.

So I did. And it didn't thrill me. It was OK, it wasn't horrible (like the clutch on the GM "900" was) but it just didn't blow me away. Perhaps I've grown too enamoured of the way the DSG acts. That really did blow me away first time I drove it, and I still enjoy it. So, no thrill, and there's still the nightmare of those inevitable, horrible standing-wave traffic jams at Vienna on the way home from Fauquier County bike ride.

And as it happens, there aren't many, if any, SE Alltracks with 6MT in the pipeline. It would have been a very long wait for one with both the 6MT and the DAP (and I really, really do miss Park Distance Control, which I had on my BMW 5-series wagon).

You're right, I was thinking of the Gen1's, which is what I had. Tunnel vision. The Gen2's might be modified and resold, but many are long in the tooth and will probably go with the Gen1's. The Gen3's get a two stage modification. My dealer's owner told me that the dealers will get first dibs on ready-for-sale Gen3's that they took in, then they will be available to all dealers, kind of like the executive car program.

If there ever is an approved modification, that is.

Yup, part of the mod approval is VW doing more in the e-car area. With the CAFE standards getting axed, with a big thanks from the BIG truck makers(most profit), e-cars may go the way of Dinosaurs, at least until gas goes above $4-$5 again. Or gets scarce.

hello gents-

just trying to make up my mind here about which new Golf Wagon to buy. in an area with some snow so All-Trak is nice for those jaunts up north to go skiing, but realistically, i really only see 10-20 snow days a year. so a few questions:

is the premium for the all-track worth it?

does the sunroof affect the utility of a Whisper Bar and euro bike rack?

my last 6 cars were manual- including my present TDI. what do you gents think of the DSG? i like the control and involvement i get from of shifting myself. am i going to miss shifting?

did anyone get the drive-assist package? what's it like? is this available with the 6-speed manual?

thanks!

I drove the Alltrack and the 2017 Sportwagen several times to make sure my perceptions were consistent. I liked a lot about the Alltrack but the ride was too stiff and bumpy over smooth tarmac. The 17" wheels and the suspension just didn't work for me. In bicycle terms, it was like carbon chatter when I wanted ti smooth.
