Don't be this guy

Im sure this has made the rounds, but i just ran across it. Embarassingly, i can relate to being completely waxed on a grinding climb and weaving too. But this looks bad for all involved.

I do get the waving going uphill but it is a really bad idea to make it in a road like that, where is pretty much open road. IMO the ride F...ed up.

And if that wasnt an uphill well... even worse f... up!

I saw this happen ~50 yds in front of me in a Club ride a few years ago. Rider just flat out hung a left turn right into an oncoming motorcycle on a similar road.
Never saw anything like it. Rider caught the motorcyclist just on his tail end and went down; mortorcyclist was OK and stopped. A moment earlier and

Does the Garmin Varia pick up motorcycles? Not that it would have made a difference here since even if the guy on the bike had one it would have been pointing perpendicular to the road.

That's some good disciplined riding by the motorcyclist. As much as you know mentally not to swerve to avoid something, it can be really hard to fight that instinct when it happens in real time. It looks like he modified his path just enough to avoid the bike but not so much that lost control.

if you're doing anything like that without looking behind... why? We have a couple bridges onto islands here where the road goes from bike lane to no bike lane with a curb separating the road and a sidewalk, I see people ride right into the road to take the lane there without so much as a glance behind. It scares the hell out of me.

I can't make out whether he is wearing headphones, but I have noticed riders getting dangerously distracted while using headphones in both ears. And why I only use one, in my right ear, only when I feel it's safe to do so. In other words, not when traffic passes closely.

He could have been shelled if the road was super steep. It's no excuse but it's a lot easier to lose your head and do something stupid if your bouncing off your max HR.

From the point of view of the motorcyclist: this was no big deal because
  1. The cyclist turned left into the roadway with plenty of time for the motorcyclist to react, I'd estimate about 4 car lengths which is a workable gap fo evasion. The motorcyclist may have been able to pick up a potential threat earlier if the cyclist was already not pointed dead straight up the road, that would have been a tip-off. Timing is everything because if nimrod-cyclist turns left into motorcyclist at 1 or 1 1/2 car lengths in front there will be a kinetic result.
  2. The oncoming traffic lane looks to be clear for quite some distance up the road
The cyclist is a moron. There is never an excuse to turn into traffic. That is a mistake that will end your life. C'mon, we are cyclists which means not only do ride but we ride with awareness and skill. Which means we know how to ride a straight line under max-HR power, when we are fried and when we can barely turn over the crank. I don't buy any of this weaving-desperation nonsense for minute.

Unless the rider is a nimrod and has neither sense nor skill. Just 'cos he puts on spandex and rides a bike doesn't make a schmuck like that my comrade.
