Bike Camping around NYC Area

Now that the weather's getting better I'm getting an itch to go for a one nighter somewhere around here, hopefully with girlfriend in tow.
(but prepared to go solo if i have a hard time talking up the romance of getting lost, and bit by deer ticks, mosquitos, regular ticks, spiders, birds, people etc.)

Tentative plan is going up along the Hudson via Metro-North then breaking off in some suitably remote direction. Or possibly Long Island along the water and sleeping on the beach.

I'm relatively new to the area, at least in this capacity, and would appreciate if anyone had any stories or tips to share.

Thx!

There is free camping for cyclists, for one night, in Montauk state park - you will need your own gear. Can even take the LIRR back after.

the Montauk bike hostel is amazing. There are a few other places in long island but nowhere near as nice as the bike hostel.

You can also go up north, not super far, california hill

We all should do a camping trip this summer @zzy @ frikki

There is no *legal* camping at Bear Mountain, but right next door, at Harriman, there is:

If you came up our side of the river, you could stay in Harriman state park--there is everything from campsites to cabins for rent:
https://parks.ny.gov/parks/145
Second largest park in the New York State park system...

Take NJ Transit/Port Jervis line to Tuxedo--in the summer there is a shuttle up into the park--but I don't know about bike transport:
http://www.myharriman.com/take-train...est-side-park/
You can ride from Tuxedo to where the paved road (Kanawaukee) heads into the park, but you would be on the verge of a busy highway (17)--not pleasant--although the hiking trails can be accessed right from the station.

From the Sloatsbug station it looks like you can get onto Seven Lakes Drive easily--and get up into the park.

On NJ Transit you will need a bike pass I think--not sure how that works.

Or you can take Metro North to Ossining, take the ferry across the Hudson to Haverstraw, and ride some reasonably pleasant backroads into the Park (this is my nabe):
http://www.myharriman.com/take-the-f...king-harriman/

Or if no bikes involved the Suffern to Bear Mountain trail starts just outside of Suffern (also a NJ Transit stop).

This is a beautiful park once things turn green near Kent, Ct. it has camp sites. Many of the sites are along a stream that is great for lounging in after a ride.

I used to ride from Manhattan to my parents house near there frequently, but it could be shortened to cherry pick the best of the ride by taking the train to cold springs and riding from there to the park. It is still a pretty hilly ride with some gravel roads if desired.

^ Anticipated to be closed for the 2017 season.

I've camped at Housatonic Meadows State Park, very beautiful.

Says all camping basically up in air ...

What's up with the CT state budget?

Doh, didn't read that. That is sad if it ends up happening.

There is camping further up along rt . 7 north of Kent near Kent falls.

On the west side of the river near Kent on river road there is primitive camping that people hiking the Appalachian trail use, among others. Some are right near the river off the gravel road and others are a about a half mile in on the trail. I've ridden my bike a few times on it though it's foot travel only. It is flat and smooth and quite nice.

A perk about camping near Kent is great meals are accessible if you don't want to bring food.

Kingsley tavern is my favorite but I'll admit a little out of sync with primitive bike camping. There is also a deli with great breakfast and lunch nearby.

Thanks for the replies guys!

California Hill looks dreamy, and is conveniently located exactly 100km from home according to google maps.

I'm gonna go scope it out solo as soon as my shoulder's back in riding shape.
Kent I'll save for when I take fairer company with me.
Then Bear Mountain third!

I'll report my findings!

718 Cyclery runs various microtours- I hear good things about them. If nothing else, it is a good list of locations:
