I grew up on Phoenix and spent the first decade of my working life there, but the opposite side (north Phx and Scottsdale) from where you're work location is. I"d of said North Scottsdale for sure, but you'll not want to commute from there. Perhaps Ahwatukee might fit your needs. I'm sure you'll get some Phx guys on here to give some more real time guidance.

I live in Tempe, 900 feet from a Sprouts market, 500 feet from a weight gym, 1/2 mile from a freeway on ramp, 1 mile from the commuter train stop, 2 miles from downtown Tempe (restaurants, entertainment), 1.5 miles from ASU, 1/2 mile from a library and museum, within a mile of two good bike shops...
...and, oh yeah...your work is a 30 minute casual ride away. It's the same complex where we take our water samples to the lab. It's 15 miles of easy riding to the base of South Mountain, Mummy mountain to the north, Ahwatukee to the south, riders all over the place... I LOVE Tempe. City Bike Info Teh Google Sez...
