This is actually something I wanted to do myself on a steel bike. Assuming the walls inside the tube are straight (no butted ends near where you want to cut), I would think it would be pretty simple to cut the tube using a hacksaw and using the proper sized tube saw guide like one of these, for instance: http://www.techsouthinc.com/pipeclamps/sawguides.html.
Of course you'd have to face the tube and perhaps ream it, which is a pretty easy job for a decent shop I'd think. Now, the big question for me: any Paceliner have a 1.5" O.D. saw guide they could lend me? I'd be happy to pay shipping both ways and throw in a six pack or bottle of wine, and of course post pictures and the results, good or bad! |

Chat with this gentleman: false_Aest
Tommy knows people. I believe there is a gentleman named Eric Zimmerman who may be able to help. Chat with Tommy. Good luck!

If you don't mind shipping, I'd call Bilenky in PA, otherwise maybe Stinner up in Santa Barbara?

I think he wants to shorten the head tube not the steerer tube..don't think you want to use a pipe cutter on the frames head tube.

I don't think a pipe cutter, technically a TUBING cutter (yes; there is a difference. Think "wall thickness") could cut a straight gauge headtube as most are pretty thick. You might bottom out against the cutting wheel before penetrating the tube. Plus, they're usually meant for soft materials such as copper.

HEAD tube, oops! Yes -- cannot do head tube with the above tools. My mistake.
Steerer tube -- tubing cutter as above works great, used one many times. Doesn't bury cutting wheel since it wedges the cut open as it goes deeper, and eventually cracks the last bit. Automatically cuts as squarely as a hacksaw in a guide, and doesn't need significantly more cleanup with files afterward... 6=1/2dz. BUT! Definitely NOT the right tool for the head tube. Dang, I should read more carefully. Last edited by cachagua; 08-28-2016 at 11:25 AM. |

Get deeper drop bars and don't mess with the frame.

Just get a hacksaw and eyeball it. We believe in you.

realistically any bike shop that has the tools and know-how to face a head tube can do this. obviously any framebuilder can also do it.
additionally any full service machine shop would be able to take care of this. it's a pretty simple task at the end of the day as far as a machining operation.
