Where's Joachim? I called this last year...

His response was, "You can be the sample collector."

Interesting

I first heard of "fecal transplants" as a part of a news story on CDIP. Apparently it is a "fringe" treatment but works if done properly. Apparently because its a new treatment its really expensive, I have read stories that there are significant numbers of folks that do "home brew" transplants. Honestly, sounds super disgusting, but if it works then more power to them. My sense is that you would be taking an incredible risk,

Ray

Watched 'Life on us: a Microscopic Journey' the other nite. Had some info on fecal transplants for Krohn's, etc sufferers. Seemed to help.

Interesting watch if you're not freaked out by creepy crawlies that live on our bodies

I bet you could DIY this treatment with help via a Craigslist post.

Lots of activity in this space from start-ups.

I'd do it in a heart beat, if I needed to. A little strange, but honestly, it's not like you eat the stuff. They drop a feeding tube to administer it.

There is the poop bank that will literally pay healthy people to come take a dump, so they can use that for treatment. I first heard about it in 2008/9 time frame, when a group of students pitched a start up idea on the topic of making fecal transplants easier.

Still a lot to learn about the microbiome. Thanks for posting.

It's interesting. So I guess once it's up there then it's found a happy home for life? And you don't need to keep up with the treatments?

It's kind of like a chicken and egg thing, how did it get there in the first place for all the Cat 1 Pro's out there?

Data have been indicating that gut flora play a part in a large number of body functions. Everything from uptake of nutrients to systemic inflammation to depression.
We are not individuals...we are ecosystems.

For this reason I have been eating about three large scoops of Greek yogurt each day. I don't know much about Chinese medicine, but a friend tells me that they emphasize the gut as a central focus in healing. Also, there is a documentary on Amazon Prime, I think, about research on the gut and the cells that live there. They refer to the gut as a second brain. Very interesting.

Research has been showing the gut microbiome is much more important than previously believed. Some inflammatory bowel diseases and Clostridia difficile patients are now being successfully treated with fecal transplants. A recent small (80ish patients aged 5-19, iirc) study showed that children with autism improved cognitively by an average of 1 year 9 months within a 6 week period after receiving this treatment. This is going to be an important area of research, especially in treatment of chronic diseases. Links to gut microbiome and longevity are currently being explored--imagine healthy octagenarians selling their poop for profit.
We're going to hear LOTS more about this in the next 5-10 years.

Some fun facts:
Walking around, we carry only 40ish% of human DNA. The rest is hitchhiking.
and
The gut microbiome carries enough genetic material to fill one ton of DVDs with information.

Funny thing is that this kind of thing is normal for large animals with gut issues. Have a vet uncle that had a healthy cow with a port so they could easily and cleanly get the bacteria over to the cows that needed it.

I checked and my health insurance covers a poop transplant. I'm now on a waiting list for a donor...
