HG53 9 speed chain question

Cut one link too short. Wondering if I can push the original pin back in to add a link, or if this is one of the chains that require a new break-off pin.

You'll need a new pin or you can use a a few links from one of Sram's 9 speed chains if you have one.

I have done it with mixed success.

If you do it, bring along a portable chain tool for the next couple of rides in case it breaks loose and you had to do a roadside repair. If nothing happens after >5 rides and that same link seems to hold fast, I would sleep well and move on.

I love weird fixes but pushing pins back into chains always got me weird, if you have a used 10 speed chain the right length moving around, then why not to use it? Will be smoother and more silent.

Use a new pin.

KMC links and a new piece of chain.

Heck, the famed Sheldon Brown made an entire chain using KmC links as outers. The ShelBroCo chain I believe. Easy to disassemble for a thorough cleaning.

I think all HG chains were made to pin in the right direction and break off.

New pin..they come with 2, or used to. Don't push the old pin back in..almost guaranteed chain break.
