WOT: Grace Vanderwaal

I am late to this party but my 11 year old daughter introduced me to this young lady’s music yesterday and I was really blown away.

If you are like me and missed this she was on the TV show America’s got talent.
You can see her videos on youtube and she released a 5 song album yesterday.

After all the election non-sense I am happy to have something innocent and beautiful to occupy my thoughts and restore some sense of hope.

I've been a fan of the AGT show for a number of years, and watched and rooted for Grace throughout the season. I really enjoy the show. You get to see some incredible talent (as well as some really corny stuff), but the hook for me is really watching the contestants for whom the opportunity to showcase their particular talent is a life changing experience. It's really a pinnacle experience for most of them. It's meaningful and heartfelt - and gut wrenching when they get booted off the show, as ultimately they all do except one.

The diversity of talent that humans can express and astounding. I find that encouraging and upbeat in a pretty bleak world.

I see that there are a few other Vanderphiles here, bumping this because I missed an entire year when I could have been listening to this heavenly gift to music. Trying to make up for the wasted year by playing her music 24/7.

I read some of the threads from last September on other sites after her win on AGT. Despite the fact that America fell in love with her, there are people who do not appreciate this astonishing talent. I am sorry for their lives of darkness.

I have heard everything and I have worked at a thousand concerts. I started as a roadie in San Francisco in the '60s, smoked a joint with Garcia and met Janis Joplin when she was only wearing red panties. I have several friends who have Grammys. Grace's music is the most refreshing music I have heard in decades.

Anyone who does not revere GVDW's level of talent is dead to me. This is incandescent genius. The brightest stars of the music business want to work with this tiny bundle of creativity. No other singer had dared to present nothing but original material that had never heard before it was performed on AGT . All four of her AGT songs have gone viral. When she released her first EP it debuted near the top of the charts.

Here is a link to her AGT audition, 200,000,000 views including Faceobok, one of the most viral videos of 2016.

Beautiful Thing

Light the Sky

Clay

Less than a year after her AUDITION she can own the stage and rivet 20,000 people in a stadium, armed with nothing but an original song and a ukulele. Bruce Springsteen does not have that level of cojones, and I LIKE Bruce!

I'll just drop the link to her YouTube channel, where you can hear all of her work.

while my reaction was not quite so intense, i do find her to be a revelation. she is the anti pop star, someone who appreciates the craft, not just some catchy singable crap.

Just watched her AGT performances. I haven't cried like that since Susan Boyle sang "I Dreamed A Dream".

They call her the next Taylor Swift, but I think she's better than Taylor Swift was at that age. I've never seen someone that young to make such an emotional connection with a performance. She's terrific.

I don't think she's "Way Off Topic", though. She probably rides a bike...

Broke her wrist recently in a bike crash.

While there are technical flaws in her music, you hit on her appeal. She delivers EMOTION by the truckload, and if the uke is slightly out of tune (it was in the audition) her sheer presence is unique. She makes tough, crusty, hog ridin' fools weep.

It's a year later, and her learning curve is astonishing. In perhaps a response to the overwhelming "shows" involving dancers and other distractions, Ms. VanderWaal seems to want that stage to herself, and with nothing more than a song and a ukulele she owns it like Tina Turner.
