PSA: Kevin Costner's Allez from American Flyers on eBay
$40K. Where do people dream up these prices?
"Kevin Costners Racing Bicycle from American Flyers Movie Prop 1985 Allez." http://www.ebay.com/itm/221581462843#prclt-yXXSe16P Question time: What do you think it's worth? In other words, what's the value of the Hollywood premium? Here's an example from a year ago: An Allez, likely in better shape, for $400: http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=136757 |

There can be huge premiums for items attached to certain cultural phenomenon. However, they can be fleeting.

Too bad it's not an auction. That's how the real value of these fungible-but-for-the-famous-person-that-touched-them items is determined. It would be interesting to watch an auction.

I don't think it's worth that because you are trusting the seller that it's authentic. $40k is a lot of trust.
What did pee wee herman's bike sell for? I think that had a signed picture and some other stuff with it. I could have waaay more fun with $40k that buy that old bike.

For 40 grand, you would have thought that he might have offered free shipping.

Well the one in the movie had chrome in the DS chainstay or some chrome aluminum thing for the chain slap, this one doesnt have that but who knows...
Second, looks like in the movie they used tubulars... ok... the bike was sold and the guy put clinchers?? big mistake. 3rd... there must be like 200 millions of those Allez bikes still moving around exactly like that one. Not that is a bike hard to find... Who knows if the guy bought it thinking it was the bike of the movie... the other problem is that KC's name don't worth like 40 grands at all. IMO even 5000 bucks is way too much specially when there is no way to prove it is the movie bike. Heck...oscar freire's colnago, that in cycling world is way more than CK (IMO), his bike was priced like for 3500 bucks. Hope nobody here buys it. Guy must be needing a new car or something |

I wouldn't pay that much for Lance Armstrong's or Greg Lemond's bikes that have won actual races.
That bike is a prop given to a movie studio by Specialized and is worth a couple hundred bucks. If it were autographed by Kevin Costner it might be a bike show curiosity but nothing more than that. |

Has anyone heard of an Amercan Flyer badged traditional leather saddle? I saw one a few years ago on ebay, regret not buying it.

Well given the quality of the photos and the extensive description in the listing it seems that 40k is a bit underpriced...

If it weren't for his movie "The Postman," that bike would be worth at least $411.83.

With that auction and the lack of documentation of it's history other than his word, he should feel happy to get $400.

I remember seeing one of Lance Armstrong's old team of Motorola bikes for sale in ca 2000--a Caloi, I think. It was in Dave Lettieri's (his former wrench) shop in Santa Barbara. Price was $1500. I remember thinking that was a bit expensive for a vintage bike, but not too bad considering the success he was starting to have.
