one ride was recovering from surgery riding alongside mike carter when (after) he had broken his hip - or so the story goes // suburu montgomery.

Sigint / corps.

So, I started out with a model of two parties, the sigint agencies (SIGINT) on one side and the spambot corporations (CORPs) on the other. Between them is a Wide Area Network (WAN/internet) which they use to achieve their goals.
For SIGINT the goal is to gather as much data as possible: all user profiles, names, addresses, emails, phone calls, you name it.
For CORPs the goal is to get a maximum number of pageviews, adclicks, whatever. People looking at their advertisements and buying their products.

Side effects are that they invest in the network's infrastructure. They buy more and stronger servers so they can store more user profiles. They buy more and better cables so the data throughput goes as fast as possible etc.. This grows the network slowly but surely.

At this point the game concept was basically a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game. But those games are typically defined by direct control from the player and I thought it would be boring to go in the same direction, so both parties simply perform actions by themselves with the player having no role whatsoever. So I started to think of it more as one of those Tower Defense or Management games but where two players were playing eachother competing and cooperating to reach their goal in the fastest way possible. The "tech trees" in the game were born from this, and I also implemented a tiered structure, somewhat like how you upgrade units or towers in one of the aforementioned games.
Well, this would be nice and good by itself, but the player was not a factor at all and I did want some involvement. So I thought about that for a while and remembered the game Ogre Battle and its very laid back approach of influencing a battle.
Also there's a well-known science fiction theory that says that if you connect enough computers with eachother a spontaneous consciousness will emerge from the network, the Ghost in the shell.
Those two clicked for me and that's how the player's identity was born.
