installing bar tape that comes with no finishing pieces

This Cinelli bar tape I just bought doesn't come with those two finishing pieces (cheater strips) that you put under the brake hoods. I also note that the perforations on the tape start about five inches from the beginning of the tape. Am I supposed to cut off that section to use as finishing strips, or just forego the finishing strips?

Unless you are thick-wrapping a 46cm bar, you should be able to cut a 3" section off the end to use. I start wrapping from the end that doesn't have perforations and starting with 2" of that section is fine. Bar wrapping is a personal thing though, so YMMV.

I don't like the look of non-perforated tape that turns into perforated, so I cut off the non-perf end and start wrapping 1-2cm from where the perf starts.

I use the leftovers as the aforementioned cheater strips

If you work with it, you can figure-8 around the hoods and not even need the "cheater" pieces... they are, after all, kind of cheating

If it's the tape that I'm thinking of, measure your old tape if possible or do a dry run before snipping. Every inch of the Cinelli tape including the non-perforated ends was needed to wrap a set of 44cm Nitto Noodles.

In my experience, many handlebar tape manufacturers seem not to have gotten the memo about the move to wider bars. Big difference between the Nitto B115 on my Trek 520 (38cm width as I recall), and the Nitto on my Schwinn Volare (44?)

Yeah I would just cut the strips off for the levers, and if the tape wasnt long enough for the bar I'd ask for my money back. I've never wrapped bars though and not had plenty of extra left over afterward.

I use the small strips to cover the shifter bands and do not figure-8 at the hoods. I start the wrapping at the bar end, inside to out over the top and just keep wrapping in the same direction which puts the tape back to front over the top on the bar "tops".
Just my preference.

cheater strips

Use the old ones if they are the same color.
Especially if they are still stuck on the levers.

You can also make some out of the old tape that you pull off.

That can work. I've done it before.
