Celebrating 200 years of the bicycle

Short article in local newspaper: Monterey Herald- Celebrating 200 years of the bicycle
Quote:
Two hundred years ago in Germany, Baron Karl von Drais demonstrated his most famous invention: the laufmachine — or “running machine,” the prototype for the modern bicycle.

... except that the Karl Drais's machine wasn't a bicycle. It was a forerunner of the bicycle for sure, but it was not a bicycle, as it was not wheel driven.

It would take another 45 years before the true bicycle came into being.

Interesting read about Karl Drais' Laufmaschine and the inventions that lead to the modern bicycle (and how slow of a process it was when compared to other XIX century inventions)
