I need to learn all this - I haven't had the cranks off yet either. Is there an obvious way to tell? I need to do some Googling or Youtubing to learn the difference.

Thanks!

Yup..BB last and BB30 'can' be noisy. Lotsa grease in/around bearings and clip, new higher quality bearings..

Take chain off and spin cranks while hand on seat tube..if you 'feel' any grit/roughness...new bearings time.

So it only creaks when you are pedaling, and then only when you have a lot of weight on the saddle? Have you tried swapping out saddle/seatpost?

I greased it but haven't swapped out the saddle/seatpost, so that's a good one to try. Thanks!

My $$ is on the seat post/saddle interface. Take the entire seatpost clamp assembly apart, clean thoroughly, and very lightly lubricate all the mating surfaces including the seat rails. I chase a similar noise for two years until I discovered it was in the seatpost clamping mechanism.

if it's a BB30 crank, you won't see anything sticking out of the bottom bracket shell, the crank arms will appear to attach directly to it. if GXP, you'll see an adapter of some sort sticking out of the BB shell. or another way to tell: the non drive side crank arm can be removed with an 8mm hex for GXP, 10mm hex for BB30.

+1

this is easy enough to do and could very likely be the culprit here.

Thanks very much for the beta on the BBs.

I've done the greasing of the seatpost and rails and clamps, but I'm going to swap the saddle and seat.

I'll second this one as the cause of a seemingly crank related creak. I replaced my rear skewer on my creaky Giant TCR with ultegra and viola, no more creak!

On mine, it was the seatpost once and the front skewer more than once. Cranks got loose and made noise, but that was pretty obvious due to play (ugly day there)

It's the cranks! Don't even bother checking nothing else.

After my brief experience with a never quiet CAAD 10 I will never buy another BB30 bike.

Could also be the seat rails where they insert into the saddle base. Had a noise emanating from there on a Spec saddle recently.

Thanks Beatnik, I will take that as a compliment....?

Full disclosure, I have no financial interest in Loctite, only plenty of experience using it to fix many a dreaded BB creaks on OS BBs

As seen on TV...."Set it, and forget it!"
