Good point. Avian Influenza, also.

I didn't get the impression from the OP that this was a mass die-off.. but several dead birds along the road as he was riding. Perhaps my assumption, though.

when my daughter was in her vegan stage as a teenager, we went out for a group ride. A bird swooped down and flew into her wheel -- instant decrapitation. In 50 years of riding, I don't think I have hit a bird, much less killed one.

May be a good sign for our baseball teams. Bad news for Orioles and Blue Jays. Also, have not seen a Ray of sunshine since Sunday.

In CA vector control monitors dead bird reports

it is a good measure of various mosquito born illnesses, such as west nile. check with your state or county vecto control program as they rely on reporting of such things
