I have a 35 minute commute each way. I would say that is about the minimum for the car to come up to temp and run efficiently enough to justify the diesel premium in purchase cost and fuel. I like to get it out on the road for 1-2+ hours twice a month at least. Racing takes care of that during the season. In the offseason I will take he long way to destinations and do drives I could avoid. I'm taking my kid back to college on Sunday, that's an 8 hour round trip. The car will run noticeably better after a run like that.

Cars continue to be useful long after the loan is paid off.

Not to mention some people prefer not to finance a depreciable asset in the first place.

Are there any assets that are NOT depreciable?

Well, if one believes DeBeers diamonds are always appreciating assets.

Re-stated: assets that are highly likely to be sold for significantly less than that amount originally paid.

Of course they do, that doesn't mean I factor that into cost of ownership calculations when figuring out what to buy.

The offices of Renault in France were apparently raided today looking for evidence of emissions tampering akin to VW!

According to a buddy of mine, a daughter in a doctorate of philosophy program is not a depreciating asset. That was the reasoning as to why he sold his 911

I laughed so hard that I almost rode into a ditch

Not to be pedantic, but:

a) any asset that is already fully depreciated
b) land
