Brake lights for bikes

This actually seems like a pretty good idea in general, both in traffic and riding with other cyclists. I may order a couple...thoughts?

I often use just my front brake. In which case, the light wouldn't turn on.

As a general rule I am in favor of anything that makes us more visible. The fact that the light would also indicate we are slowing would be a plus. My question would be would the light itself be bright enough? I'd love to hear some real world opinion.

The only times were my braking is a safety hazard is when another cyclist is following me closely. These lights seem like they would not be visible to a rider drafting off your back.

Refer to the below thread.
Had one, returned it as it's hardly visible.

If brake lights are what you're looking for, I would suggest that you get the Lupine Rotlicht

Cheers and ride safe!

Yes I'm a geek, I HAD to get one. Simple! Blinky! Self contained!!

They're a single red LED. Tiny, pretty low output.

Useless for a paceline, way too slow (I removed mine since it was just a distraction).

Seconded on the Rotlicht, just because it's a generally excellent tail light.

OK that Rotlicht looks very cool (I have a L&M Vis 180 that always seemed plenty bright, but I love the motion sensor brake light).

The Lumos helmet has an accelerometer to have brake light functionality. Also connects to optional turn signal controls
Bikes for the road should have this stuff really.

This light just doesn't seem bright enough if you are worried about cars. If you are worried about other riders, then you may be riding with the wrong people.

Fellow Paceliners,

If brake light function is what you're after, for cost/performance, I'll recommend getting the Cateye Rapid Kinetic

http://www.cateye.com/en/products/detail/TL-LD710K/

The Lupine is great (I have one), but it is twice or thrice the price of the Cateye. Lupine has significantly more built-in sensors (light sensor, adjustable brightness intensity etc), but the Cateye is more than adequate for most of us.

Cheers
