I'll ask when I pick it up tomorrow and report back. I'm curious if it came out the top or the bottom but didn't get to talk to the mechanic. My guess is that he jammed something up from the bottom to hold the starnut in place and was able to extract the bolt. I tried it myself this AM but I didn't have a tool that would capture the starnut from turning. I also could not tell if it was the center of the starnut turning or if the whole thing was spinning.

So I just spoke to the mechanic and it seems that he banged the starnut and stem out together from below until it popped off the top. Picking up bike later today, I'll post updated pics with stem "slammed" to the image gallery later if you want to track how it all came out.

Thanks for all the advice.

As promised, hammered out from the bottom up, mangled bolt and starnut, but bike is otherwise fine. I have a starnut setter en route.

Thanks for the advice.
