It occurred to me that my Salsa El Mariachi might be fun to try as a multi-purpose bike.

I could do a 1X, with a ridged carbon fork. I could do a set of wheels with 2.4’s for mountain biking and a set of 42’s on lighter rim for around town and even some gravel rides. Hmm

The biggest challenge to the idea is to get the top tube to work as I want it now (flat bar) and may decide to try drop bar. On a drop bar bike I would like MAX 58cm and on a flat bar I would end up on a longer stem than perfect. It could be done but I would think a 58cmTT would be the ticket to make both work.

Gates like 650 and that combo would be a super fun bike around town but many of these suggestions could be very useful and very fun. Like I said maybe I compromise.

I am warming up to making my Salsa EL Mar idea. I could run a new sram gx 1x12 (10x50) with a 38 ring and get the range of a 11x42 for the road and better than what I use now for dirt (36 max x 30ring). One set of dirt wheels and one set for around town and gravel rides. This could be super fun. A true do all from road to MTB.

Fat 650 comfy bike

I have been chasing this paradigm as well. I was going to call Jeff Lyon to build up a new steel 650 frame with nice fillet brazing, nice dropouts, and a nice curved fork. I was thinking centerpull brakes with room for lots of tire from compass, mounted on studs. I was thinking wide gears for hills w Campy Potenza. I recalled Jan Heines testing of his various favorite steel rando bikes against newer bikes and how well tge Cannondale Slate did. I see a Slate around once in a while and get a little excited. I test drove the local reps Slate, it fit well. I bought a new 1 x 11 Slate which is much different from the bije I wouls have built in construction and parts, but the same in intent. It is Alum alloy frame, hydro discs, SRAM shifters, and a 30 mm travel fork with one freaking leg! It rides great. It is comfy over crap in the streets. It is really comfy descending fast. It rides like a road bike and then takes off the road fine. It doesnt turn on loose gravel well. Check it out. It is not cheap, the bad point, but it is cheaper than my custom build would have been.

I could not do drop bars with the TT length unfortunately. I could do a Jones Loop for extra hand positions though.
