OT: The lost era of long songs & Jams...
Okay, maybe not lost, but in todays processed, canned, auto tuned, prepackaged song era I don't see the progressive improvisational jams or long songs that marked the 60/70's era.
I won't say there isn't anyone doing that today, but I'm not really aware of any bands on that track. What are songs that you remember that top seven/ten minutes or more...past or present? What have you got? For starters: The Allman Brothers - Mountain Jam (33:41) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNuNz2idDtY (Leaving aside politics, the dude can shred the guitar) Ted Nugent - Hibernation (14:36) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M49j05LZ9WY Embrace the feedback, master the feedback, make the feedback work for you... radio cost too much and long jams have a small audience. the other thing that's lost is the ability to play something that's not on some programmers preapproved list. so instead we get various degrees of classic rock..but nothing that's too long.

Cream Live at The Grande Ballroom, Detroit October 15, 1967 This is from early in the Cream years, when the Clapton/Bruce/Baker wanted to drive & carry the show competing between themselves on stage. Dimed Marshalls, lousy PA. But this got old 'n' tired fast even for these guys and just as those fleeting moments existed, soon under the weight of expectation, the virtuoso extended jam became something Clapton couldn't run away from fast enough. |
