Progress
I started this Jan 20 at 212. Now I am at 193. I dropped about 1.5 pounds a week - about optimal. I walk this fine balance between having energy/ strength to train and maintaining a calorie deficit. Another 15 pounds to go. I find I get more focused on getting lean (losing the fat) as I go on.
I am doing much more strength training, which I dislike, but at my age I realize it is recommended. 4 times a week as I feel "recovered." Push ups, ab and oblique work, curls, squats. I read strength stuff helps burn calories. So far, so good. I did some of this last year - some, not much - and let me write that I lost that strength real quick. I improved a lot after a few weeks but I was shocked at how weak I had become. Like from 3 sets of 20 push ups last year to one set of 8 when I started this year. Yikes. I guess you really have to keep up with the strength training. This "push" to drop weight and train is over for me come late August, so I am mentally preparing now for that day. I do not want to fall apart then. Last year I had planned to ease up a bit, and that went ok until I broke my ankle and then tore Achilles. 3 months on crutches and I fell apart. I think a lot of this weight loss comes down to mental training of sorts. So, so hard to keep to it in our culture. |

Great job everyone! Unfortunately I personally have some set back and I am at +2 lbs.
Need to put in some effort

@tuxbailey Okay to add a 2024 sheet? I'm happy to do it, only takes a moment.

I lost 40 lbs at one point this year due to a health scare. I gained back 20 so had a net loss of 20. Could still use to lose about 10 lbs, but in a healthy way.

The bagpipe didn't say "no" (Shel Silverstein reference), so I went ahead and added a 2024 sheet.

A couple things of note (perhaps)...
Should this thread be closed and a new one opened with "2024" in the subject? Mixing weight training with dieting muddies the water, especially for someone like me who has never really done any weight training. In particular, I suspect my modest attempts at adding weight training to my workout regimen in the past year (not much, all at home, almost all using my body as the resistance) contributed to my failure to acheive the weight loss goals I stated at the start of last year. Looking at myself in the mirror and the fit of my clothes suggests I have less fat, so likely modestly more muscle. I toyed with the idea of trying skinfold calipers to calculate body fat percentage. I used them in college in one class back in the 70s (I was a Kinesiology major, so not altogether unusual). We used something like the attached image. It costs far more than I'd care to spend on this "project." Inexpensive calipers are available nowadays, though the reading I've done suggests repeatability is a problem. Does anyone have experience with inexpensive skinfold calipers? Good, bad, or otherwise?

As for the DEXA Scan, though it may be the "gold standard" (so says the company on their website), in my area at least it seems to be $129. I wouldn't call that cheap, certainly not if I wanted to check on an occasional basis (every month or two).

carrying on into another year.
2023 I made some steady but slow proress. I rode a whole bunch less, changed some dietary habits and lost 26 pounds down to 213. into 2024 with kids leaving home and my wife and I moving house back to her old farmhouse and the work that entails I have lost another 11 pounds in 2024 with my clothes finally starting to loosen up and some older cycling kit coming back into rotation. As a result of less cycling last year my knee which had meniscus work done a few years ago is now quite weak. Aim for this year is less car and more biking to rehab the knee back to strong again.
Good luck everyone, ride safe. |
