I will brake the rules and start today. Also do not know what bike I will be taking. Part of me wants to do it on a new bike, lighter bike. Hampsten Strada Bianca. Put some Gravel King SKs 32mm. Gearing is ok but not optimal for my shape right now (Compact up front with a 32T in the back). ------------ VS ---------------- My trusty Elephant NFE. A lot heavier (10lbs). I just ordered some WTB byways so the little bit of thread will be awesome. Those will be run tubeless. Gearing is awesome for this ride. 48-30 up front and 32T in the back. |

I am definitely considering. Change things a bit. I do know it will make the ride a bit harder some times but also much easier the others. I think I won't know to the day before.
what are you deciding between? |

That's a tough one.
Go with whichever bike feels best climbing. fwiw this year I'll have tubeless 650b SBH on the FF. Overkill in a good way, and I just have to go with it. Though it is really hard to improve on a nice cx tire in Deerfield. |

they way it's currently looking, i may be riding D2R2 on a brand new bike.
is it foolish to attempt a maiden ride as a deerfield 180k??

@sparky - the FF looks awesome, I have done with with the SBH, last year actually and it was great. Also have done it with babyshoe pass and the SBH to me are a great improvement for that ride. @angry - ahahha, nah, it would be the best testing ground for a new bike. |

If your body has a lot of miles this season it's not nearly as risky. I've read reports on here of cats doing 600Ks on brand new (to them) bikes.

FWIW, I rode a 200 mile ride on a Look 585 a week after I got it. BTW, I am still planning on the 160k, I don't think I have the fitness for the 180k. |

Geezus... so everyone's doing at least 160km this year?! I barely survived the 100km last year (with a few extra miles through in), I barely ride 100mi/wk now (and that's if it's a good week), and I've only ridden a handful of rides over 50mi this year. I don't know if I can handle the 160k?

I am in it for the 180k. Going with big tires. First time I did it was on 28's now 38's

I rode the 100k last year on my Kirk JKS-X with 35mm tires. I think I can fit 32's on my Co-Motion Nor'wester and might give that a try for something different. Can anyone comment on the roads on the 160k vs the 100k.

Forgot to comment on tire choice.
Last year for the 100km, tubeless 700x35 BJPs were great. There were a few gravelly hilly sections where a little more traction would've been nice, but definitely not necessary. This year (assuming I can make it), I'll be running tubeless 700x37 WTB Riddlers. |
